This year, though, humankind has discovered the enormous universe. And while they expected to discover a grand drama of diplomacy, gunships, wormholes, and stoic councils of aliens, they have instead found glitter, lipstick, and electric guitars. Mankind will not get to fight for its destiny—they must sing.
Decibel Jones and the Absolute Zeroes have been chosen to represent their planet on the greatest stage in the galaxy. And the fate of Earth lies in their ability to rock.

In theory, this should have been exactly my kind of book: Earth is discovered by the rest of the galaxy and humanity gets the chance to become part of the big cosmic community of sentient beings. And of course it's decided by an intergalatic Eurovision Song Contest if they actually get to join – or get eliminated, if they end up being last. There, fun, ridiculous science fiction! It still exists! Sign me up for it! Also, Decibel Jones, the guy the aliens picked for the contest, is some kind of messed up, queer, former glamrock star, and from what we got to see of him, I feel like I could have really liked him. The problem is that neither him nor the plot are a huge part of the actual book. There's a lot of world building, which is interesting as long as the aliens or planets in question play right into the story, but most of the time they don't, or only become relevant about 50 pages later when you've forgotten all the background information (and at some point I started to only skim through it, anyways, to be honest). With everything that was revealed at the end, I also feel like it would have been more interesting to get a recap about what happened back on Earth instead, not only with the main characters but also in general. Anyways, the story does pick up around the final 100 pages, which is where I absolutely fell in love with it, only to be a bit let down by the resolution again (which does get points for creativity, though, because there's no way I would have guessed all of the thing going down). I was mostly disappointed that the conflict between Decibel Jones and his former/now-again bandmate Oort was never really solved. There was so much there, and so much implied, but they never really seem to work things out again. This still is the direction I want sciene fiction to go into, and that's worth a lot in a world full of the same dystopian nightmares over and over again.

Genau er soll die Welt vor ihrer Zerstörung retten und das ist irrsinnig. Genauso irrsinnig wie der Schreibstil von Frau Valente, die gerne mit einigen Kommas arbeitet, ihre Sätze verschachtelt und maßlos übertreibt. Wohingegen die Handlung selbst, überschaubar ist, aber das drumherum! Das ist kunterbunt, gefährlich und voll von Glam, Glitzer und Rock. Man fühlt sich da wohl nicht ohne Grund an unseren Contest auf der Erde erinnert. Für mich war es das erste Buch in dem Stil. Douglas Adams kenne ich, aber ich habe noch kein einziges Buch von ihm gelesen. Weswegen ich am Anfang leicht überfordert war von….naja eigentlich allem! Bis ich das Hörbuch gefunden hatte auf Spotify. Es mir anzuhören war da schon einfacher, um bei allem mitzukommen und ich fing an gefallen an dem Buch, bzw. Hörbuch zu finden. Es ist schwer in Worte zu fassen, wie verrückt alles ist und manche Sätze sind so lang, dass sie eine eigene kleine Geschichte erzählen. Irgendwann habe ich auch aufgehört nach einem Sinn oder nach einer Logik zu suchen und habe mich einfach von der Geschichte berieseln lassen, so machte es am meisten Spaß. Und ich habe auch das Gefühl, so funktioniert das: Kopf ausschalten und genießen. Auch hatte es mich zum nachdenken gebracht über den ESC selber, der hier auf die Schippe genommen wird und finde es grandios, wie sie das alles aufgearbeitet und in einen Science-Fiction Roman verwandelt hat. Für mich war das schillernde, glamouröse, absurde Abenteuer von Decibel Jones was vollkommen Neues. Leider muss ich sagen, war es auch nicht so ganz meins, wobei als Hörbuch es schon viel besser funktionierte. Ich hatte durchaus gefallen gefunden an der abstrusen Geschichte und zeitweise meinen Spaß, doch einen zweiten Band möchte ich nun weniger Lesen. Es war gut für mich, da es neu und damit interessant war, aber jetzt habe ich die Erfahrung mit dem Stil gemacht und das reicht mir nun wieder auch. Kurzum so etwas schräges war letztendlich doch nichts für mich, aber eine Erfahrung wert und ich kann es bedingt weiterempfehlen. Es hat seine guten Stellen, die mich wirklich interessiert hatten, doch da ich nicht so sehr auf vollkommen abgedrehte Geschichten zu stehen scheine, was ich nun genau weiß, bin ich damit fertig. Wenn ihr Fans von schrägen, verrückten, irren und glamourösen Geschichten seid – dann bitte! Greift zu!
