Hervorragendes Buch über Mutterschaft aus vier Perspektiven.

It took me quite a long time to get into this book. For a large part of it, I struggled to really connect with it, mainly because I couldn’t tell the characters apart. Even though they’re supposed to have very different personalities, the writing style for each of them felt too similar, which made their perspectives blend together. It probably took me until around the 50% mark before I really started getting into the story. That said, there were definitely aspects of the book that I liked. One thing Holly Bourne does well here is showing the ugly sides of motherhood. There’s no glossing over the difficult parts of it. That honesty felt refreshing because it’s something you don’t see very often in books that deal with motherhood. I also liked how the story explored the dynamics within a group of friends and how differently people can experience life even when they’re part of the same circle. The friendships felt messy and complicated in a way that seemed quite realistic. However, the ending didn’t really work for me. The reveal that one of the kids accidentally started the fire and that all the adults then decide to cover for each other felt pretty unrealistic. After such a messy and emotionally complicated story, the resolution seemed a bit too neat and almost like a happy ending that didn’t quite fit with the tone of everything that came before.

Unterhaltsam, aber oberflächlich

Ein Baby Shower/Gender Reveal endet mit einem Waldbrand. Wurde das Feuer mit Absicht gelegt und wenn ja, von wem? Ist die Frage, die für eine spannende und fesselnde Lektüre sorgt, die mich gut unterhalten hat – mehr aber nicht. Im Mittelpunkt stehen vier Freundinnen, die sich nicht nur durch ihre Persönlichkeit, sondern auch durch ihre aktuelle Lebenssituation sehr voneinander unterscheiden: Lauren ist Mutter eines neun Monate alten Babys und heillos überfordert (oder leidet sie doch an einer postnatalen Depression?); Nicki ist schwanger und vor allem auf sich selbst fokussiert; Charlotte hat einen unerfüllten Kinderwunsch und versucht durch Manifestation und positives Denken damit klarzukommen; Steffi hat ihre eigene Literaturagentur gegründet und steht kurz vor dem großen Durchbruch, sie will keine Kinder. Prinzipiell eine spannende Ausgangssituation die das Thema Frausein bzw. Mutterschaft aus verschiedenen Perspektiven beleuchtet, für mich in der Umsetzung aber leider viel zu stereotyp und überzeichnet. Auch das Ende kommt sehr abrupt und auch wenn ich den Aufruf zu mehr weiblicher Solidarität voll und ganz unterstütze, war es mir hier irgendwie zu oberflächlich. Ein nettes Sommerbuch für den Urlaub. Ich warte aber auf eine Verfilmung als Miniserie – würde ich mir sofort anschauen!

Ok, ich war nicht nur generell sehr inaktiv in letzter Zeit, sondern hab auch die Bücher, die ich gelesen habe, nicht mehr ausführlich bewertet. Aber dieses Buch - DIESES BUCH - verdient einfach einen eigenen Beitrag. 🙈 Diese Geschichte von vier Frauen, vier Freundinnen, die unterschiedlicher nicht sein können und doch zusammenpassen, hat mich absolut fertig gemacht. Ihre gemeinsamen und ihre eigenen Geschichten waren so traurig, so schön, so wichtig und vor allem so ECHT, dass ich dieses Buch nicht weglegen konnte und absolut verschlungen habe. Riesig große Empfehlung an alle, aber seid gewarnt, es ist teilweise keine leichte Kost (ich hab sogar das ein oder andere Tränchen verdrückt und das passiert mir quasi nie)! Liebe geht raus an diese vier fiktiven Charaktere und all jene realen Frauen, die durch sie repräsentiert werden. Ein subtil feministisches Meisterwerk, ich habs geliebt 🌻

The book of unspoken, uncomfortable truths about motherhood Even though some people might argue that the book shows the stereotypical views of different women on the topic, I would say that it shows yourself, as a reader, how you think of the topic and lets you think about other opinions. Throughout the whole novel, you suspect someone of the Little Women started the fire. The one you have the least empathy for. But why? Maybe because of her decisions in the past as a woman or mother? Is the problem that the woman is child-free and focuses on her career? Or is it the one that is massively overwhelmed with her life as a mother? The novel shows how different you can look at motherhood and how others may think of your choices when not explaining them. In the world of social media as a part of our everyday life, you can get influenced easily. In the book, I think the author made a really good job of showing how it influences ourselves and relationships with others, our best friends, even if we don’t realise it. The ending was very abrupt, but it is more about the book itself and the characters that makes it really worth reading!!

Wieder einmal ein großartiges Buch von Holly Bourne! Hatte es innerhalb von zwei Tagen durch.
