Die Geschichte spielt in einem Ort in Japan, der nur "Snow Country" genannt wird. Ein älterer Herr aus Tokyo besucht eine heisse Quelle und begegnet hier einer jungen Geisha. Es entwickelt sich eine sehr wirre Beziehung zwischen den beiden. Er besucht sie nach längerem Abstand wieder und die Beziehung bleibt die gleiche. Am Ende der Geschichte bricht ein Feuer in der Ortschaft aus. Hatte extrem Mühe in die Geschichte hinein zu kommen. Nach etwa der Hälfte ging es besser. Die Charaktere scheinen teilweise interessante Geschichten zu erzählen zu haben, aber der ganze Aufbau der Geschichte ist sehr verwirrend. Die Beziehung zwischen den beiden Hauptcharakteren ist sehr konfus beschrieben. Der Schluss schien mir abrupt und unfertig. Vielleicht habe ich auch die poetische Bedeutung hinter dem Ganzen nicht verstanden. Hat mich jedenfalls nicht überzeugt.

The characters say a lot, but at the same time they say nothing. She condemns him for his unfaithfulness and his lies, as he comes from Tokyo, but she is also a victim of her lack of words. A vivid love story in a silent and snowy landscape. The prose is wonderful and to be recommended - the actual plot was redundant for me.
