Slow Gods feels like staring into the night sky — beautiful, endless, and a little overwhelming. In this space opera the stakes are high (as in world ending high). What stood out most is the use of genders. While eight genders exist with distinctive pronouns the Powers That Be aka Shine only allow two — an intriguing, powerful commentary on control and identity. The story explores life, death, and rebirth, and whether the person who returns is still the same. The narrative voice is extremely interesting, and I'm still not grasping it enough to describe in a couple of words. And most of all, the void between the stars is a concept I’ll be thinking about for a long time. The universe is vast, which sometimes makes it hard to fully connect with the characters and the overall plot. ☄️ 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨. 𝘖𝘶𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘬. 𝘞𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨. 𝘎𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴. 💭 DNF ❌ Optisch ist 𝘚𝘭𝘰𝘸 𝘎𝘰𝘥𝘴 von Claire North ein echter Hingucker. Umso größer war meine Neugier auf den Inhalt. Der Einstieg ist sehr ruhig, aber zunächst durchaus interessant. Besonders spannend fand ich die Idee, dass sich Sprache, Ausdrucksweisen und Verhaltensmuster nicht nur wie auf der Erde, sondern sogar von Planet zu Planet unterscheiden. Dieser Gedanke hat mir gefallen und versprach Tiefe. Nach wenigen Kapiteln merkte ich jedoch, dass die Geschichte für mich nicht richtig an Fahrt aufnimmt. Auch nach rund 100 Seiten blieb die Handlung extrem zurückhaltend, ohne dass sich ein klarer Spannungsbogen abzeichnete. Nach etwa 140 Seiten habe ich schließlich die Reißleine gezogen, was mir ehrlich gesagt in der Seele weh tat, denn Klappentext und Anfang waren so vielversprechend. Ich kam einfach nicht richtig in die Geschichte hinein. Der Stil ist sehr sperrig, die Erzählweise stark auf Stimmung, Gedanken und Atmosphäre fokussiert, während der eigentliche Plot kaum vorankommt. Vieles passiert eher im Inneren der Figuren als auf Handlungsebene, was mir hier leider zu wenig war. Aus Neugier habe ich mich spoilern lassen: Ab etwa Kapitel 37, also etwas über der Hälfte des Buches, soll es spannendere Wendungen geben. Der Stil bleibt jedoch derselbe und genau daran lag für mich das Hauptproblem. Vielleicht gebe ich 𝘚𝘭𝘰𝘸 𝘎𝘰𝘥𝘴 zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt noch eine zweite Chance. Für Fans klassischer Science-Fiction könnte dieses Buch allerdings eine echte Herausforderung sein. Wer hingegen langsame Space Opera liebt, bei der Atmosphäre wichtiger ist als Handlung, könnte hier durchaus Gefallen finden.
Langsam aber lohnt sich
Eine ruhige, philosophische Space Opera, die große Fragen stellt: über Identität, Moral, Macht und das Menschsein. Im Zentrum steht Maw – eine Figur, die sich durch Tod, Technologie und Entfremdung verändert. Anfangs schwer greifbar, wird seine Entwicklung umso stärker spürbar. Besonders beeindruckt haben mich die vielfältigen, selbstverständlich gelebten Geschlechterrollen und die düstere, atmosphärische Welt. Vieles bleibt vage – aber gerade das erzeugt Spannung und Tiefe. Die Sprache ist poetisch, das Tempo langsam. Wer sich auf die nachdenkliche Erzählweise einlässt, wird mit einem klugen, berührenden Roman belohnt, der lange nachwirkt.
