Der gute letzte Band der »Tiny Pretty Things«-Dilogie, in dem Gigi nach ihrer schrecklichen Verletzung zurück an die Academy kommt. Dort geht es in ihrem letzten Schuljahr um alles und sie verbündet sich schnell mit Cassie, um sich endlich an ihren alten Peinigern zu rächen. Aber dann ist da auch noch Bette, die ihren Platz auf keinen Fall aufgegeben und beweisen will, dass jemand anders Gigi vor das Auto gestoßen hat. Die Story geht gut und ohne Längen weiter, wobei alles zufriedenstellend aufgelöst wird und man nochmal richtig merkt, wie Ballett das Leben der Protagonistinnen positiv als auch negativ beeinflusst hat und wie verkommen das Business teilweise tatsächlich ist. Außerdem wird auch angesprochen, dass eine harte Ausbildung in dieser Branche noch nichts garantiert und dass man danach eben trotzdem perspektivlos und mit zerbrochenen Träumen zurückgelassen werden kann. Sprich haben die Charaktere hier nochmals etwas Tiefe bekommen und auch der Schreibstil, der weiterhin abwechselnd aus der Sicht von June, Gigi und Bette erzählt, liest sich wieder relativ einfach und flüssig. Zwar hätte ruhig noch etwas tiefer auf all das wichtige und schockierende eingegangen werden können, dass die Nebencharaktere getan haben und was sie dazu getrieben hat, aber auch so kann man mit diesem Ende wirklich zufrieden sein. Insgesamt also eine tolle Reihe für alle, die Teenage-Drama mögen und mehr über die skrupellose Welt des Balletts wissen wollen. Zwar hätte der Plot an einigen Stellen noch etwas spannender sein können, aber auch so fühlt man sich durchgängig gut unterhalten.
If Thiny Pretty Things is Gigi's book, then Shinky Broken Pieces was June's story to shine. The book was just as dark and tense as the first one, and with Bette trying to figure out who actually pushed Gigi, we have an added mystery element. Although I'm not sure why so many perspectives were neccessary, I think with a stronger focus on less characters, it would have been even more impactful.
I can’t even describe why I disliked this book. It was boring and there wasn’t a lot of plot, the separation of fall and spring performance didn’t even play a role in this one because it was all about Swan Lake at the end of their semester. This book is about revenge and nothing else. I feel like everything else was irrelevant and there wasn’t a lot of character development. So many things were left unsolved or didn’t even play a bigger role (for example Gigi’s ‘accident’ or a student-teacher relationship). Ultimately, there wasn’t a real climax, contrary to the show, where everything built up to the Ripper performance. I can’t believe I’m writing this but: the show is better than the book.
