Day 6 of Halloween Readathon: Beginning was a bit hard to get into but in the end I really enjoyed this book. 4/5✨

Usually I only like one character from a book that isn’t the main protagonist. This book, however, has such rich character development that I couldn’t help but love all three. They each have their own story and display trauma, loss, regret, and more. It shows you can remember the past but now dwell on it. It shows the impact of female empowerment and what it means to have friends. It also delivered on the creepiness and thrills but shows that fear can be overcome.

The second half really turned it around for me and changed my opinion for the better. 3.5⭐

Hmmm, not bad. This was so much better than Legrand's other book Furyborn, which I thoroughly detested. It actually showed me that she can write, the style was engaging and the atmosphere spooky and dark. The three main characters are the stand-out of the novel and I loved the representation we got. It didn't feel forced at all. Ultimately though, while I liked a lot of things about it,the plot was rather lacklustre and extremely rushed. She could have developed the relationship between the girls so much better and taken time to make Val's redemption feel earned but instead the magical powers save the day. I honestly could have done without that whole bit. While I enjoyed the monster of the story, there wasn't any build-up for his defeat. So I would recommend this for a quick fun Halloween read but not to expect any ground-breaking genre-bending feats.

3-3.5 ⭐️ I loved the setting, I loved the atmosphere, I loved the premise of a horror-meets-fantasy story set on a remote island featuring queer girls. It's super creepy and has great diverse rep. But the book lost me around half-way/two-thirds through the story, it got messy, rushed, and weird? I didn't understand anything that was going on anymore.
