28-year-old image processing specialist Takanori Ando being handed a USB memory stick by the president of the CG production company where he works. Tasked with analyzing its contents, Ando gasps at the graphic images he sees, and quickly concludes that they cannot have been faked or generated by CG software. Assuming the man in the video did indeed kill himself, what could his purpose have been in leaving this footage behind?
Ando saves the file to his PC. When he plays it again the next day, the man's body has shifted to a lower position, and in subsequent viewings, the video undergoes further changes.

Spannend gedacht, nicht ganz rund erzählt
Koji Suzuki beweist auch mit S, warum er zu den spannendsten Autoren des Horror-Genres gehört. Er schafft es einfach jedes Mal, Spannung, Philosophie und Wissenschaft unter einen Hut zu bringen und genau diese Mischung macht auch hier wieder einen großen Reiz aus. Die Ideen sind stark, teilweise verstörend und regen zum Nachdenken an. Leider wirkt die Story an einigen Stellen etwas erzwungen. Manche Entwicklungen fühlen sich weniger organisch an und fügen sich nicht ganz so stimmig in das Ring-Universum ein, wie man es von den anderen Teilen gewohnt ist. Vielleicht liegt es an der langen Pause seit the Ring birthday. Unterm Strich bleibt S trotzdem ein interessantes und lesenswertes Buch mit spannenden Ansätzen, das aber hinter den Erwartungen zurückbleibt. Für Fans des Ring-Universums definitiv einen Blick wert.
