Plan B for the climate

Increasingly extreme weather conditions are intensifying the debate on climate change. Politicians are conjuring up horror scenarios and calling for drastic and unachievable measures. But there is another way: the cause of global warming is carbon dioxide from the burning of coal, oil and gas. However, there are two large natural sinks, the oceans and land plants, which offer us a path to less radical climate protection. Currently, they absorb around half of human emissions every year. Their performance does not depend on emissions, but on the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. If we could reduce our emissions by at least half, the CO2 concentration would remain constant and the goal of stopping global warming would be within reach. In addition, the performance of the sinks can be increased with gentle measures. Renowned physicist Gerd Ganteför outlines a citizen-friendly path to the future that can also be followed by countries in the Global South that still have their growth phases ahead of them.
