I grew up with the story of The Phantom of the Opera. The musical is something very close to my heart which is why I wanted to read this book in the first place. Christine is a wonderful protagonist. She is confident, knows what she wants and speaks her mind, which is something I didn’t expect because of the fact that this book is over 100 years old. Raoul on the other hand is much more vulnerable. He acts as the „love sick fool“ which is not something I usually enjoy but it made sense of the time and the story itself. The Phantom, that is called Erik, is the most interesting written character in this whole book. One of the main reasons why he is so interesting is the writing style and how the story is told. The book is written like an article. A journalists writes about the events which is why the characters seem so distant at times. Especially Erik. You don’t get to see him or hear him talk until the end of the book. You only read about other people describing what they saw. Which is why he is so much more ghost-like and less human. But the moment you get to see him, the narrator changes. Now we get a first person narrator, in form of an old friend of Erik, who is able to tell the reader how Erik feels. That was a great choice. The story is exciting. Full of drama, manipulation and pain. On the one hand all of the tragedy happening in the opera house, on the other hand the tragedy which is the phantom himself. The book deals with a man who was treated his whole life like a monster until he become one. Gaston Leroux showcased that beautifully. My favorite scene in that matter is the one when Christine cries with him. A simple action of compassion changes the whole man. I still think about that message and think it still is a very important one today. The writing style is simple and demure, which made sense because it is supposed to be an article. I enjoyed this book very much. I was never bored or annoyed by anything. Honestly, I loved every second of it. It even brought me to tears which underlines my thought that the Phantom of the Opera is a timeless classic and definitely worth reading.

Jako dobro! Inace mi ne pasu "klasici" , ali ova mi je bas legla. Prica o fantomu opere mi je inace za 5* , ali su mi 2 stvari uskratili uzivanje. Stil pisanja i Christine. Za stil... da li je do engleskog prijevoda ili je jednostavno tako , ali nije mi se svidio. A Christine me je uzasno nervirala. Od mene jaka 4*.
