It‘s clearly written with the assumption the reader had already played the game, hence the world building and environmental descriptions weren’t exactly detailed. This is a good thing though since it can really focus on being a retelling of the STORY. What I love about the novelization is that we get deeper glimpses into the characters thoughts. For instance, when he decided to help out the Brothers at the junk heap because they are pretty much different sides of the same coin and he empathized with them. Or the scene in which Kainé tells Emil his eyes are not a sin, one of my favorite moments in the game, also had an emotional impact here thanks to the dive into Kainé’s mind. The game does a good job at portraying all of that wordlessly already, but experiencing it through another medium is still great in its own way. Overall the writing was pretty simple and digestible so it’s not too overwhelming, even with all the action going on. The game of course is superior but this is a nice addition for fans that want to re-experience the story without having to play the whole game again. Probably my favorite quote from this: “He really did use an infuriating number of words for a book─or maybe he just couldn't help himself because, you know. Book” because, you know. Book. Classic Weiss interactions.
