Description
Valora Luck has two things: a ticket for the biggest and most luxurious ocean liner in the world, and a dream of leaving England behind and making a life for herself as a circus performer in New York. Much to her surprise though, she's turned away at the gangway; apparently, Chinese aren't allowed into America.
But Val has to get on that ship. Her twin brother Jamie, who has spent two long years at sea, is there, as is an influential circus owner, whom Val hopes to audition for. Thankfully, there's not much a trained acrobat like Val can't overcome when she puts her mind to it.
As a stowaway, Val should keep her head down and stay out of sight. But the clock is ticking and she has just seven days as the ship makes its way across the Atlantic to find Jamie, perform for the circus owner, and convince him to help get them both into America.
Then one night the unthinkable happens, and suddenly Val's dreams of a new life are crushed under the weight of the only thing that matters: survival.

Mein zweites Buch der Autorin, und auch wenn mir "The Downstairs Girl" noch ein bisschen besser gefallen hat, hat auch dieses Buch mir Spaß gemacht und mir spannende Lesestunden bereitet 😊 Die Prämisse der Geschichte ist interessant und sie zeigt einen Teil der Geschichte, der bislang im Dunkeln geblieben ist. Die Charaktere sind liebenswert und man fiebert mit ihnen mit und hofft, dass am Ende alles gut für sie ausgeht. Es ist schön, die Beziehungen zwischen den Charakteren mitzuerleben, vor allem, wie sie einander helfen und beschützen und ihre eigene Familie als Kontrast zu der Diskriminierung bilden, die sie erfahren. An manchen Stellen hat das Buch sich für meinen Geschmack zu viel wiederholt und teils etwas gezogen, aber das Ende war natürlich super spannend, da man wissen wollte, ob alle überleben und was anschließend passiert 😬 sprachlich haben mich die teilweise sehr seltsamen Metaphern ein bisschen irritiert, das war mir im letzten Buch nicht so aufgefallen. Was aber gut, war, wie nah man durch den Erzählstil wieder an der Protagonistin dran war und wie sehr man dadurch mit ihr mitfühlen konnte. Insgesamt auf jeden Fall eine unterhaltsame Geschichte, die ich gerne gelesen habe 😊
