Lady Susan, The Watsons, Sanditon

Really glad, I finally read these short and unfinished stories by Jane Austen. Lady Susan: definitely not my favourite, might be because I don't tend to enjoy epistolary (is that how you spell this word? :D) novels. However I also didn't really enjoy or care about any of the characters. The Watsons: Quite enjoyed this and I believe if it had turned into one of her full lenght novels, I would have enjoyed it even more. Sandition: Definitely my favourite out of all these. This story felt the most like the rest of her books, when it comes to writing style as well as plot.

Jane Austen just never disappoints me. This edition of Jane Austens later works contains 3 fragments, "Lady Susan", "The Watsons" and "Sanditon". Sadly, this is the last set of works by Austen I didn't read and also the last one she started writing, but never finished. "Lady Susan" is an epistolary novel, rather harsh in tone with a different kind of heroine than in all her other works. It was fun reading but not one of her strongest work, probably because she couldn't develope all her skills in writing dialogue or describing while writing a letter. "The Watsons" is contrasting to "Lady Susan." It is easy going, spirited and full of life and heart. It reminds one of Pride and Prejudice and presumably might have taken a similar ending which is probably why she stopped writing in the end. "Sanditon" is the last novel Jane Austen started before she died. Coincidentally, it revolves around illness and hypochondriacs. Compared to her previous novels, it is really different. This piece is the one I would've liked to be continued the most. Although the main character isn't strong like Elizabeth Bennet or even as sassy as Emma, the characters and Sanditon itself feel interesting and different. It's a shame that Austen never got to finish it. Afterwards you wish, she could've had more time to finish and complete these novels, especially "Sanditon".
