He has a large number of publications on medieval philosophy to his credit, some of which have attained the status of standard works. He is a member of the Roman Academy of Sciences (Accademia die Lincei), the Tuscan Academy of Sciences and Literature in Florence (La Colombaria), the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and the German Academy for Language and Literature (Deutsche Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung).
