Jüdischer Republikanismus in Frankreich

This volume assembles twelve articles all centering on the question of political commitment among French Jews. The Dreyfus affair forms the point of departure, illuminated here from various angles (Bernard Lazare, Max Nordau, the French intellectuals around the turn of the century, the Centenaire 1994). Major Jewish figures of French intellectual life (Julien Benda, Léon Blum, Jean-Richard Bloch, André Spire, Raymond Aron) are analysed; some of them torn between Zionism and Franco-Jewish identity, others representatives of a republican persuasion. Further topics dealt with are anti-Semitism and republicanism in colonial Algeria, literary engagement with the question juïve since 1968, and Levinas' political philosophy.
