Die Journalistin Andrea Elliott (New York Times) begleitet Dasani und ihre Familie mehrere Jahre lang bei ihrem Weg als mittellose Familie in New York. Drogen, Armut, Obdachlosigkeit und Vernachlässigung bestimmen den Alltag der Kinder. Selbst als sich Dasani aufgrund ihrer Begabungen eine seltene Möglichkeit bietet wird ihr Leben von ihrer Herkunft geprägt. Sehr gut lesbare Biografie welche aber auch viele sachliche Einblicke in die Politik, das Schulsystem, den Alltag in Armut und in das Leben als BPoC-Familie in New York gibt. Absolut lesenswert!
Einst der besten Bücher die ich bisher gelesen habe
Eine wahre Geschichte Dasani ist die älteste Tochter von 8 Kindern von drogenabhängigen Eltern. Sie werden 8 Jahre von einer Reporterin begleitet. Eine Familiengeschichte deren Familientraumata bis ins 18. Jahrhundert reicht und jede Generation von den Traumata beeinflusst wird. Ein Buch ohne Happy End, aber ein Buch was einen realistische Einblicke gibt wie Familien mit ihren Dämonen zu kämpfen haben und gleichzeitig jeden Tag um ihre Existenz kämpft. Ich würde alles dafür tun um dieses Buch nochmal zum ersten Mal lesen zu können.
