About the book

In the series debut The Testing, sixteen-year-old Cia Vale was chosen by the United Commonwealth government as one of the best and brightest graduates of all the colonies . . . a promising leader in the effort to revitalize postwar civilization. In Independent Study, Cia is a freshman at the University in Tosu City with her hometown sweetheart, Tomas—and though the government has tried to erase her memory of the brutal horrors of The Testing, Cia remembers. Her attempts to expose the ugly truth behind the government’s murderous programs put her—and her loved ones—in a world of danger. But the future of the Commonwealth depends on her.

3.5 After enjoying part one very much, part two leaves me a tiny bit disappointed. Again we have a typical middle part of a trilogy. The proceedings here are a lot slower compared to "The testing". The first half of the book is very suspenseful and great in world-building, I also liked the setting a lot, but it doesn't feel attached to the plot as a whole. The second half is a lot calmer then and preparing things for the final book. Cia is still a great heroine but I couldn't always understand her behaviour in the relationship with Tomas, especially keeping in mind what she find out at the end of book one. Despite the little disappointment I still enjoyed the book and I am so glad that I can continue with book three immediately.

Independent Study is kind of the typical second part of a dystopian trilogy. It's a nice book but I didn't like the first part of the book that much. The second half is really good. I like Cia and I'm very interested how the conclusion to the story will be. Hopefully Cia won't die.
