Regency Roman mal anders!
Short, familiar and yet a whole new way to tell a faerie tale. I quite enjoyed all the Characters and their quirks. The theme of the book is about offering help within your own realm of possibility, instead of fretting about saving the whole world. And I needed that. There is A LOT of shit happening in the world right now, and feeling helpless comes easy because of that. This book makes you remember all the little ways in which you can help though.
Started reading this book after seeing it on a friend's list. Really enjoyed the lighthearted and dreamy feel of this story. Some Regency influence, some fairy influence and some funny dialogues going on. The story and most of the characters didn't get to deep or difficult. It was mostly fun and easy to enjoy. A good and nice interruption of troublesome reality. I found the concept of the main character being an allegory for neurodivergent people quite interesting.
This has been such a wonderful and thrilling tale. It's been a while since I have read a fantasy novel. Theodora's soul has been split in half by a fae when she was a child. Therefore she reacts and feels quite different than the rest of society. "She had little effort to spare for making unpleasant men more comfortable." While trying to become whole again and avoiding her marriage minded aunt, Theodora becomes part of something bigger and also finds out that she can indeed feel emotions. Her journey is about finding out who she is even though a great part of her is missing. Despite her inability to feel deep emotions (at least she thinks so) she does find love. Theodora shows us that despite being different we can still love deeply with all we have to give - even with just half a soul.
Absolutely adorable! I love Dora, she is a refreshing character and Elias is her perfect grumpy counterpart. He is so adorable when he falls in love with her even though or because she is so different than the other ladys. The ball scene with the stars, ugh I loved it! The fantasy and adventury part of the story was also intriguing. Dora only having half a soul is an interesting concept and I think there could have been more inside to it if the book would have been a little longer. Nevertheless a fantastic story which was quick and very enjoyable!
The Amazon algorithm recommended this book to me after finishing "This Fatal Kiss" luring me in with the promise that it was somewhere between the lines of "Howl's Moving Castle" and "Bridgerton". I understand where the comparison comes from, though I personally believe it is more along the lines of Jane Austen and "Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell". Algorithm taglines aside, I cannot emphasize enough how much I enjoyed this cozy, whimsical read. Olivia Atwater and the first installment of her Regency Faerie Tales series have bewitched me, body and soul, and I am so grateful for the joy this book has brought me. Though it is not a grand fantasy epic, the worldbuidling is thorough, interesting as well as well historically researched. The characters are human, flawed and driven by the purpose to actually change their little part of the world for the better which is what makes them so incredibly charming. If you're looking for sweet and cozy winter time reading material, this is your book indeed!
