This is a case where I liked the content of the book and see how eye-opening it must have been at the time, but wasnt exactly a fan of the style. Some artistic decisions, like not showing the cause for getting re-institutionalized or changing wards, not finding out about Istina as a person, breaking down other patients to single character traits etc., though very intentional, didn't work for me and served more as a barrier from reality. The novel was also a lot more lyrical and heavier on metaphors than I imagined, which just isn't my preference. I had imagined raw descriptions of every day life in the clinics, and while I did get that, too, the prose in general just wasnt my cup of tea. However, the descriptions of the treatment of the patients, the fear and humilation, were really impressive. I also liked that Frame chose to show changes in psychiatric care over time and the differences between institutions. You really see how the patients are stripped of agency, are at the power of nurses and doctors and cling to small acts of kindness. Reading this from someone who has been through this herself made it especially sad.
