Description

'Beautifully captures the pain of growing into yourself, and the intensity of all-consuming female friendship' ROSE WILDING

You lose your virginity to a boy from your gender theory seminar, and the first person you tell is Ella.

Ella's with you at the party when you first kiss a girl.

And Ella takes you to the hospital the first time you're diagnosed.

Over the next few years you have a string of relationships and jobs, but you can always count on Ella to be there for you - until the drinking and the parties, the hospital visits and late-night calls, blur the lines of your friendship into something unbalanced and fragile, at risk of breaking altogether.

The worst part is you can see it coming. The worst part is you don't know how to stop.

From a blazing new voice in Scottish fiction, Gender Theory is an incisive, affecting debut about illness, identity and how we care for those around us.

A coming-of-age story that doesn’t hold your hand.

Gender Theory is an intimate and emotionally charged debut that explores the messy intersections of identity, illness, and human connection. Set in Scotland, the novel follows an unnamed young woman as she navigates early adulthood through relationships, sexual discovery, chronic illness, and, most importantly, her intense and often complicated friendship with Ella. One of the book’s most distinctive features is its use of second-person narration. By addressing the protagonist as “you,” Docherty creates a striking sense of immediacy, pulling you directly into the character’s thoughts and bodily experiences. At its best, this technique feels immersive and visceral, making moments of pain, desire, and confusion feel uncomfortably close. The novel is less plot-driven than it is experiential. Rather than following a clear, linear storyline, it unfolds in fragments that mirror the instability and intensity of youth. Where the book really hits hard is in how it talks about chronic illness, especially endometriosis. It feels very raw and honest, showing how much it can affect your sense of self and your relationships. The book also touches on sexuality and queerness, though not always in a super direct or fully developed way. It’s more subtle and tied into the character’s overall confusion and self-discovery. Gender Theory is one of those books that’s more about the experience than the story. It’s emotional, a bit chaotic, and not always easy to follow, but if you like character-driven, introspective reads, it’s definitely worth checking out.

"She puts a hand over your heart, feels it beating and says, are you nervous? You kiss her instead of answering, and she tastes like wine, and you can’t believe that this is finally happening."

"Gender Theory" by Madeline Docherty is a beautiful novel about womanhood, sexuality, self-discovery and the challenge of living with a chronic illness. We follow a young nameless narrator through her life, with her best friend Ella by her side. The second person narrative blew me away from the very first page and fit the story incredibly well. The beautiful writing, which is outstanding and effortless, captivated me and I was immediately enthralled. After just a few pages, I knew that the book belonged to my favorites stack. The story is so intimate and real that I often had to shake my head in agreement, as if a good friend understood me. We follow our protagonist through her most beautiful, most difficult and most important times. When her heart is broken for the first time, when she kisses a girl for the first time, when she loses herself in escapism only to be found again and again by Ella. When she's diagnosed for the first time and through her difficult time at university and the even more difficult time afterward. Docherty describes the longing for a person you want, but can’t have very beautifully and addresses acute topics in an understandable way and conveys their importance authentically. The narrator and her Ella are extraordinarily relatable and make you feel like you know them. A romantic story with poetic nuances that gets under your skin and leaves a lasting mark. The book feels like a long hug that you have been waiting for longingly, like a hot shower after a cold, rough rainy day or a good book with a cozy cup of tea to the serene sound of birds. Life happens, but for a moment, everything is okay. The book enriched my heart and soul, made me daydream and very happy. Above all, I understood and felt understood. I am head over heels in love and already hoping for more from Madeline Docherty!
