Description

Vivek Shraya's debut collection of poetry is a bold and timely interrogation of skin-its origins, functions, and limitations. Poems that range in style from starkly concrete to limber break down the barriers that prevent understanding of what it means to be racialized. Shraya paints the face of everyday racism with words, rendering it visible, tangible and undeniable. Vivek Shraya is a writer, musician, and filmmaker whose previous books include God Loves Hair and She of the Mountains. She lives in Toronto.

A poetry collection on being a PoC in Canada. Acknowledges anti-Black racism and Canadian settlement on indiginous soil seperately besides the own voice experiences. Some formats that seemed to work with media quotes (on Kanye West's concert, Oscars 2016) were a little inaccessible to me and the interview at the end didn't fit the poetry label imo (nevertheless very interesting!), but the other poems I very much enjoyed! Especially their raw nature, almost bluntly getting to the point, I was thoroughly gripped by them!
