Das Oratorium in Frankreich zwischen 1850 und 1914

Im Zentrum der Untersuchung steht das Oratorium in Frankreich im 19. Jahrhundert, sowohl in Paris als auch in der Provinz, und zwar aus Sicht der musikalischen Gattungsgeschichte. Das Oratorium wird anhand zahlreicher zeitgenössischer Quellen hinsichtlich seiner institutionellen, politisch-religiösen und ästhetischen Voraussetzungen untersucht, ebenso hinsichtlich des Zusammenhanges von Funktion, kompositorischer Gestaltung und Bezeichnung unterschiedlicher Gattungstypen. Fanden Oratorienaufführungen in Paris vor 1850 vorwiegend abseits der bürgerlichen Öffentlichkeit statt, insbesondere in Kirchen und Salons, etablierte sich die Gattung nach 1850 nicht nur im Konzertleben, sondern wurde schließlich sogar im ausgefallenen Rahmen von Cabarets rezipiert. Angesichts dieser vielfältigen Aufführungskontexte blieben Gattungskonzeptionen nicht auf geistliche, nicht-szenische Werke beschränkt. Analysen ausgewählter Werke verdeutlichen die Vielfalt der Erscheinungsformen und ihren Zusammenhang mit den spezifischen Aufführungskontexten und Verwendungszwecken. *** The focus of this study is the oratorio in 19th-century France, both Paris and the provinces, from the perspective of musical genre theory. On the basis of many contemporary sources, the oratorio is examined in its institutional, political and religious, and aesthetic contexts and in terms of the connections between function, compositional form and the designation of different genres. Before 1850 oratorios in Paris were performed mainly outside the context of bourgeois public culture, in churches and salons; after 1850, however, the genre not only became established in regular concert life but eventually was even taken up in the unconventional context of cabaret. In view of these varied performance contexts, the conception of the genre did not remain limited to religious, non-scenic works. An analysis of selected works demonstrates the range of varieties and their connection with specific performance contexts and uses.
