Harter Stoff, Brutal, Blutig und mit einem Killer-Ende!
Es ist wahrlich kein leichter Stoff - „Brother“ von Ania Ahlborn. Anfangs war es für mich einfach nur ein guter Horror-Roman über eine Serienkiller-Familie. Brutal und blutig, aber vielleicht nichts besonderes… Aber dann zieht es einen mehr und mehr in seinen Bann. Es wird emotionaler, tiefschichtiger und geht einem richtig in die Eingeweide. Und wenn sich dann im letzten Drittel mehr und mehr Geheimnisse lüften und sich Zusammenhänge aufklären, trifft es einen ins Herz, haut einem in die Magengrube und lässt einen verstört zurück. Was für ein Ende mit Twist und Schrecken - hat mir sehr gefallen!

⭐ 4/5 🫣 3/5 Dieses Buch ist definitiv mal was anderes und das hat mir gefallen. 'Brother' würde ich nicht als klassischen Horror betiteln. Tatsächlich finde ich die Geschichte bzw. Michael durchaus tiefgreifend. Sein Leben lang von seiner Familie manipuliert, muss Michael ein gräuliches Leben im Hinterland der Appalachen leben. Seine Mutter pflegt ein seeehr spezielles Hobby, bei dem sie erwartet, dass die ganze Familie unterstützend hilft. Michaels Job dabei ist das anschließende Reinigen und Loswerden der... 'Projekte'. Doch im Laufe der Geschichte erkennt der 19-Jährige, dass er so nicht mehr leben will, doch die Kraft, aus dieser sehr persönlichen Hölle zu entkommen, fehlt ihm einfach - bis er Alice trifft. Mit ihrer Art und ihrem Charakter gibt sie Michael den Mut, sein Leben endlich selber in die Hand zu nehmen. Doch kommt alles anders... Ich fand den Schreibstil von Ania Ahlborn sehr gut lesbar. Flüssig und durchaus bildlich. Für mich war das Buch, wie oben schon gesagt, kein Horror, doch kommt es wohl auch darauf an, wie man Horror definiert. Einige sagen, dass das Buch erst gegen Ende wirklich spannend wird, dem kann ich aber nicht zustimmen. Ich finde gerade den Verlauf sehr interessant, weil man so Michael und die ganze Dynamik der Familie Morrow und vor allem mit seinem Bruder Rebel erst richtig kennenlernt. So trifft einen das Ende noch unerwarteter. Ich hatte zwar durchaus eine Vermutung, doch lag ich nicht ganz richtig und das Ende war dann wirklich... Ja... Endgültig. Es ist wirklich harter Tobak. 'Brother' kann ich daher sehr empfehlen, weil es einfach mal erfrischend anders ist, als die allseits bekannten 08/15 Thriller (nicht böse gemeint 😉 Ich lese auch gerne Thriller).
horror meets drama
das buch handelt von michael, der in einer familie von mördern und psychopathen aufwächst und von einem besseren leben träumt. ich habe sehr lange gebraucht, um in die geschichte zu kommen, habe es aber am ende nicht bereut. der schreibstil ist sehr gut und man baut stück für stück eine bindung zu michael auf. leider zieht sich die erste hälfte des buches und es gibt meiner meinung nach einige unwichtige passagen. aber ich hätte mir kein besseres ende vorstellen können, das diese tragische geschichte so gut abrundet. wahrscheinlich nichts für schwache nerven und eher drama, als thriller, aber dennoch ein solides buch.
Loved the story, the way it was told was just too slow for me. I get that we needed all that backstory, to understand Reb‘s motivations and all - but it was just too much, with too little gore (which is the reason I got this book in the first place). Michael was a bit too much of a pushover. I would have understood if he was a bit younger, but being constantly under Reb‘s thumb… phew.
Brother by Ania Ahlborn has been rotting away on my tbr for a really long time and I regret that I didn’t read it earlier because it is really brilliant. The Morrow's are a dysfunctional family of cannibalistic serial killers living in the Appalachians of West Virginia. They say blood is thicker than water. But in the case of the Morrow family, blood unites them and binds them as they enjoy the kidnapping and killing of young women. In this crazy family, the mother is the most brutal one out of all of them. She enjoys the kill, the blood, the screams, and of course the torture. Wade, the father, is quiet and really seems to be taking orders most of the time. The older son Rebel is a complete psychopath. Misty, the daughter is really just trying to get through each day. They are all evil except for Michael. He always felt different from the rest of the Morrow clan and yearns to leave the family's psycho den after he meets Alice at the record store. Through flashbacks we learn more about what the early years were like for him and Rebel as well as the reason on why he is so different from the other Morrows. This book grabbed me on the first page and it was very hard to put it down. I was enjoying this brutal and bloody story when things took some unexpected twists. However, I didn't like the ending as it ended abruptly, leaving some things unfinished and left me with questions as to what happened to the characters. When done right it can be intriguing, but I just felt frustrated with this one. It seemed a bit lazy to end like that.
