Botchan has a chip on his shoulder. His elder brother is his parents' obvious favorite and Botchan only receives any attention at all if he misbehaves. After his parents die, Botchan is cut off by his brother and drifts into a job teaching math in a small provincial town far from the big city.

Eine tragisch-lustige Geschichte mit gutem Tempo
Wir begleiten Botchan, wie er im Schatten seines Bruders und unter der Missbilligung seines Vaters in Tokyo aufwächst. Nachdem der Vater stirbt, löst sein älterer Bruder das Haus aus, zahlt Botchan eine gewisse Summe und zieht weg. Botchan macht nun eine Ausbildung und wird alsbald aufs Land gerufen um dort an einer Mittelschule zu unterrichten. Hier trifft er auf durchtriebene Charaktere und viel Feindseligkeit. Am Ende, getrieben von Rache an einer ihm ausgeübten Ungerechtigkeit, betreibt er zusammen mit einem Kollegen Selbstjustiz und zieht zurück nach Tokyo. Die Hauptfigur ist sehr ungestüm und impulsiv, versucht aber immer für das Richtige einzustehen. Ein sehr frecher Charakter, der aber ein Gerechtigkeitsfanatiker ist und gerade deshalb für junge Menschen eine Identifikationsfigur. Er sieht hinter allem und jedem gleich eine Ungerechtigkeit und ist äusserst mistrauisch. Habe die teilweise stark überzeichneten Charaktere sehr gemocht und in Kombination mit dem angenehmen Tempo war es eine sehr unterhaltsame Lektüre.
