The Fisherman and his Son is a touching story about loss, grief, survival and social security. Having lost their little son during a stormy weather on the high seas, the fisherman and his wife have resigned in sorrow and stoically fulfil their duties day by day. Their lives take an unexpected spin when the fisherman discovers three bodies of refugees on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, including a baby boy who miraculously survived the cumbersome refuge from Afghanistan on an inflatable boat. Livaneli raises awareness of the hardship of Syrian, Afghani and Pakistani refugees, of whom sixteen thousand lost their lives in the Mediterranean Sea. He elaborates political and environmental issues in conversations and reflections that his picturesque characters lead during this novella. Compelling short story dealing with current challenges and issues where humans have failed to save the children of tomorrow, we’re once again reminded that we’re facing the largest wave of refugees since WWII. Fact is that one hundred million humans are trying to escape war, terror and poverty and receiving countries are not prepared to this flux by any means. Heartbreaking
