Murder. Paranormal. Cult. Upon finding out it's YA, I was a little sceptical at first… I haven't had very good experiences with YA thriller/mystery/horror books, but to my surprise I enjoyed this one quite a lot! The ending especially was beautifully written, cinematic almost. The only thing which bugs me are missing words, which sadly is a regular occurrence. Most of them are to/a/the, but sometimes it's a word that’s more important to the sentence as well… This dragged down my reading experience a little bit. An attentive proof read would've been good.
Somehow, it really bored me to death…
Sure, the basic idea sounded pretty exciting at first, and there were a few nice ghost and mystery moments. But overall, the story dragged on like chewing gum and barely got anywhere. Instead of the main plot about the mysterious death picking up real momentum, the story seemed to drift into a thousand side paths and unnecessary side quests: religious debates, family dramas, identity crises, even more parental stuff… all meant to be important, I guess, but for me, it completely blurred the focus. I actually wanted a creepy, thriller-like audiobook, but I got more of a mix of everything, and none of it was really satisfying. The actual main story got completely pushed to the background and was sometimes replaced by stuff that just felt like filler. ‼️ Personal opinion, you might feel totally differently 🌸
