Their dynamic begins with rivalry and resentment before evolving into an uneasy alliance as the mystery deepens The slow-burn, enemies-to-something-more arc is satisfying, filled with restrained longing, sharp dialogue and moments of reluctant trust! Their chemistry feels earned, and the emotional payoff (especially toward the end!) hits surprisingly hard. The magical elements are subtle rather than flashy. This is low fantasy grounded firmly in reality, where the paranormal creeps in gradually. The magic feels old, dangerous and morally compromised, which suits the story’s themes perfectly. Nothing here is simple and no one (not even Ellory) feels entirely reliable If I had one critique, it would be that the slow pacing may not work for everyone. While I appreciated how intentional every scene felt, there were moments where the story lingered so long in atmosphere that I wanted a bit more momentum.
