Description

"Draws readers into its spell before asking readers to consider who pays the true price of power - and what it means to refuse to let the powerful win." - Laura R. Samotin, author of The Sins on Their Bones

From the exciting and singular voice of Kamilah Cole comes a modern-day dark academia fantasy with a twist, perfect for fans of Babel and A Deadly Education.

Warren University has stood amongst the prestigious elite for centuries, built on the bones - and forbidden magic - of its most prized BIPOC students...hiding the rot of a secret society that will do anything to keep their own powers burning bright. No matter who they must sacrifice along the way.

Ellory Morgan is determined to prove that she belongs at Warren University, an Ivy League school whose history is deeply linked to occult rumours and dark secrets. But as she settles into her first year, something about the ornate buildings and shadowy paths feels strangely...familiar. And, with every passing day, that sense of déjà vu grows increasingly sinister.

Despite all logic, despite all reason, despite all the rules of reality, Ellory knows one thing to be true: she has been here before. And if she can't convince brooding legacy student Hudson Graves to help her remember a past that seems determined to slip through her fingers as if by some insidious magic...this time, she may lose herself for good.

An Arcane Inheritance showcases the rising star of author Kamilah Cole in all its splendour, in a modern-day dark academia speculative fantasy with a romance twist - perfect for dark academia and romantasy readers alike.

3.5⭐️ | An Arcane Inheritance A modern dark academia fantasy steeped in secret societies, inherited magic and the dangerous cost of power From the very first chapters, An Arcane Inheritance pulls you into the shadowed halls of Warren University, a place that feels alive with history, ambition and something quietly rotten beneath the ivy-covered beauty This is dark academia at its core: ancient institutions, whispered rituals and a sense that knowledge itself has tenth Ellory Morgan is a compelling protagonist to follow through this world. She is intelligent, driven and painfully aware of how much she does not belong in spaces designed to exclude her Her experience at Warren is shaped not only by magic and mystery, but by race, class and the exhausting labor of constantly proving herself. The story’s exploration of systemic power, privilege and who is allowed to succeed within elite institutions is one of its strongest elements and it’s handled with intention and emotional honesty You can feel the author’s lived experience woven into the narrative, especially in moments of microaggression, academic pressureand isolation The central mystery - Ellory’s sense of having been at Warren before, her slipping memories, and the growing realization that something is deeply wrong - unfolds slowly. The pacing is very much a slow burn, but one that feels deliberate. Reading this book often feels like walking through thick fog: disorienting, heavy, and immersive. Ellory’s confusion becomes the reader’s confusion and every small reveal feels earned rather than handed overr Warren University itself is richly realized. Its history, rituals and secret societies feel layered and intentional and the interludes between major scenes add depth to the institution’s dark legacy The idea that the university’s power is built (quite literally) on the exploitation and sacrifice of its most marginalized students gives the story real weight This is dark academia that interrogates the genre instead of merely aestheticizing it The romance between Ellory and Hudson Graves adds another layer of tension to the narrative. Hudson, as a legacy student and member of the elite, represents everything Ellory is excluded from. Their dynamic begins with rivalry and resentment before evolving into an uneasy alliance as the mystery deepens The slow-burn, enemies-to-something-more arc is satisfying, filled with restrained longing, sharp dialogue and moments of reluctant trust! Their chemistry feels earned, and the emotional payoff (especially toward the end!) hits surprisingly hard. The magical elements are subtle rather than flashy. This is low fantasy grounded firmly in reality, where the paranormal creeps in gradually. The magic feels old, dangerous and morally compromised, which suits the story’s themes perfectly. Nothing here is simple and no one (not even Ellory) feels entirely reliable If I had one critique, it would be that the slow pacing may not work for everyone. While I appreciated how intentional every scene felt, there were moments where the story lingered so long in atmosphere that I wanted a bit more momentum. That said, once the plot reaches its turning point around the final third, everything begins to click into place in a deeply satisfying way Overall, An Arcane Inheritance is a haunting, thoughtful dark academia novel that balances mystery, romance and social commentary with care It’s a story about legacy, what we inherit, what we reject, and what it costs to refuse to let powerful institutions continue unchecked If you love: • dark academia with teeth • slow-burn rivals-to-romance • inherited magic and buried secrets • interrogations of power, privilege, and exclusion • gothic atmosphere with grounded fantasy …this is absolutely one to pick up!
