Actual rating 4.5 Zwei ganz tolle Kurzgeschichten! Die erste hat mich emotional direkt mitgerissen. Habe Noel und Mags innerhalb von wenigen Seiten direkt ins Herz geschlossen und ich würde so gerne mehr über die zwei lesen wollen. Die zweite Geschichte dreht sich um Star wars! Das konnte mir nur gefallen
Zwei sehr süße Kurzgeschichten mit tollen Illustrationen. In der ersten Kurzgeschichte geht es um Noel und Mags, die sich an Silvester kennen lernen und dann jährlich wieder treffen, bis sich jedes Jahr etwas näher kommen. In der zweiten Kurzgeschichte geht es um Elena, die sich dazu entscheidet, sich für die Premiere des neusten Star Wars Films in der Schlange vor dem Kino zu kampieren und dabei auf den Fan Gabe trifft. Die zweite Geschichte fand ich tatsächlich noch etwas süßer als die erste. Gefallen haben mir aber beide sehr gut. Einziger Kritikpunkt ist, dass man durch die Kürze der Geschichten halt nicht so den tiefen Einblick in die Charaktere bekommt.
Midnights, die erste Kurzgeschichte, kannte ich bereits, doch auch beim zweiten Mal lesen fand ich sie noch immer super süss. Wie schon beim ersten Mal lesen hätte ich jedoch gerne noch mehr Zeit mit Mags und Noel verbracht und sie etwas besser kennen gelernt. Die Geschichte spielt an mehreren Jahren immer an Silvester und ich hätte gerne auch gesehen was dazwischen jeweils passiert ist. Kindred Spirits hat mir daher sogar noch besser gefallen. Die Geschichte ist etwas länger, spielt jedoch nur über ein paar Tage hinweg in denen Elena vor einem Kino auf den neuen Star Wars Film wartet. Obschon ich selbst kein riesiger Star Wars Fan bin, fand ich es super süss wie viel die Filme Elena bedeuten und die Geschichte war auch richtig lustig, denn dass campen vor dem Kino läuft nicht ganz so wie Elena sich das vorgestellt hat. Rainbow Rowell hat mit diesen beiden Kurzgeschichten bewiesen, dass sie einfach die absolut süssesten Liebesgeschichten schreiben kann. Ich kann das Buch jedem, der die anderen Bücher von Rainbow Rowell mag empfehlen.
I love Rainbow Rowell, not only for her writing, but also for the diverse characters she creates. I’ve heard of Kindred Spirits last year I think, but I’ve never picked it up. I didn’t know it was a festive short story to be honest. If I had known I would have probably bought it the second it came out. When I heard about Almost Midnight, a collection of two of her festive short stories, I had to get it. Plus the book is so pretty, it’s tiny and shiny (hey that rhymes) and it glitters plus it has some of the prettiest illustrations I’ve ever seen in a book so of course I had to get this. Each story has probably like 50 pages or so with illustrations, so it’s not that much text, but Rainbow Rowell still managed to make me fall in love with almost all of her characters. I don’t know how she does it, but she’s amazingly talented when it comes to creating characters. MIDNIGHTS The first short story follows Margaret and Noel, who are best friends. It specifically follows their meeting at New Year for a couple of years and tells the story of two best friends who slowly fall in love with each other. It is a bit cliché I gotta say, also it was very predictable and not at all complicated, but is that really a bad thing? It was way too short, that for sure I can say but nevertheless did I love it. I loved Megs and Noel, especially Noel, I loved how they treated each other, they basically treated each other like they were the most precious thing in the world. They behaved the absolute cutest around each other. I also loved how they are both so different from each other, Megs somewhat shy and Noel the one who likes to hug and kiss people – a lot. But they still managed to stay best friends, no matter how much they changed during the time they were apart. Although I really loved this one, I think it would have worked much better as a full-length novel. I absolutely fell in love with both Megs and Noel and I’d love to actually read a whole book about them. KINDRED SPIRITS I absolutely adored the second story, which follows Elena and Gabe, two teenagers waiting in a line to see the newest Star Wars movie. I swear that could be me. When I realized that this short story was going to feature three movie/book nerds who absolutely love Star Was I jumped up and down in excitement. I love Star Wars so much and I’d totally wait in line to see the newly releasing Star Wars movie as well. The “line”, both Elena and Gabe are waiting in only consists of three people. There’s only one other guy named Troy waiting in line with them. Although they all could have booked tickets online, they choose to stay out for a week and camp in front of the movie theatre only to make sure to get in first. The story focuses on the friendship between the three of them and even reveals something more between two of the three. I loved how there was no forced romance. It was all geeky and nerdy and I loved the sense of community that comes with a fandom. I couldn’t stop smiling. It was such a sweet story about friendship. I wish though that the bullying aspect had been more of a focus since it is a very important topic that should be addressed more and more in books, especially in books for teenagers but the story was just super super sweet. If you’re a fangirl you will for sure love Kindred Spirits and Elena, our main character, even more. Both stories are definitely worth to pick up this pretty collection. It has everything you could ask for in a YA contemporary novel. It’s so easy to relate to the characters, even if the stories are both only like 50 pages or so long, it also has so many feel-good moments, cute romances, great humour plus Rainbow Rowell’s writing is – as usual – on point. And not to forget the illustrations. The illustrations of both short stories are absolutely gorgeous and they fit the stories perfectly. I loved both short stories so much I wish they were real books; like full-lengths novels. Dear Rainbow Rowell, in case you ever read this, can you please please please make both novellas into actual books with at least 300 pages? Yes please? Thank you!
In "Almost Midnight" veröffentlicht eine meiner Lieblingsautorinnen zwei zuckersüße Kurzgeschichten, die rund um Weihnachten und Neujahr spielen. Eine der Kurzgeschichten, namentlich "Kindred Spirits", wurde bereits zum Erscheinen des siebten Star Wars Films veröffentlicht und meine Meinung dazu gibt es hier. Die andere Kurzgeschichte, "Almost Midnight", erzählt von Noel und Mags. Für die beiden scheint es zu einer Tradition zu werden, dass sie sich jedes Jahr an Silvester treffen und sich jedes Jahr ein bisschen näher kommen. Auch diese Kurzgeschichte ist zuckersüß und herzerwärmend, wie man es von Rainbow Rowell gewohnt ist. Ich habe die Geschichte an einem gemütlichen Adventsnachmittag weggelesen und wie erwartet hat sie mir ein wohliges und angenehmes Gefühl gegeben. Im direkten Vergleich hat mir "Kindred Spirits" etwas besser gefallen, aber dort ging es ja auch um Star Wars. Die Reihenfolge der Geschichten hätte ich übrigens auch vertauscht, denn eröffnet wurde die kleine Sammlung von der an Silvester spielenden Story "Almost Midnight" und erst danach folgte die Geschichte "Kindred Spirits" rund um die Star Wars 7 Premiere Mitte Dezember. Aber das ist nur eine ganz kleine Anmerkung am Rande. Ebenfalls erwähnenswert sind die schönen und niedlichen Illustrationen von Simini Blocker. Eine vollkommene Empfehlung! (Dezember 2018)
