A Sea Change by Cassandra Clare is a short novel about Matthew, set after the Last Hours trilogy. It follows him as he travels to different countries by ship, trying to get away from what happened before, but also somehow deal with it. During this journey, he meets new people and gets involved in a situation with a crime on the ship. The plot is not very complicated, but for me that was not the most important part anyway. It’s more about Matthew and his emotions, and how he is trying to move on. Matthew is one of my favorite characters from the trilogy, so I was really glad to read more about him. I especially liked seeing this quieter part of his story. It’s not very dramatic, but it still felt meaningful to me, and it kind of shows that maybe he can find some happiness again. Overall, I liked it. It’s short and simple, but it was a nice addition to his story.

Matthew’s journey through the last hours is sad, haunting and beautiful, so seeing him in this short story find his happy ending is a treat. I really liked the mystery element of this book, and how Matthew became a voice of reason, arguing that the why matters as much as the who in this mystery, and I really liked how the mystery was resolved simply through talking. Something about that just felt so right for a story about Matthew. I also really liked Sylvain, and I hope we get to see more of him in the future. Obviously 100 pages isn’t enough time to spend with a character as deep as Clare makes them, and I would love to get to know him better. Overall, a very joyful short story about Matthew after the last hours that I think fans of the Shadowhunter chronicles will eat up raw (as we do with anything Clare writes, really)
