Mit 29 Jahren hat die Protagonistin nicht nur ihren Job verloren, sondern auch Kreditkartenschulden und keine Aussicht auf Besserung. Deswegen ist ihr Ausweg ein Sprung von der Mapo Brücke in Seoul. Doch sie wird von einem Magical Girl gerettet, komplett in weiß und mit Rüschen. Als wäre das noch nicht bizarr genug, erfährt sie, wie es ist ein Magical Girl zu sein und dass sie sich zu einer Gewerkschaft zusammengeschlossen haben. Und nur die Protagonistin die Welt retten kann! Park Seolyeon hat mit diesem Buch die klassische Magical Girl Ära kombiniert mit echten Problem, die uns aktuell umtreiben und so viel Charme und Witz, dass man gar nicht merkt, wie tief man in die Geschichte eintaucht. Verdammt gutes Buch und grandiose Covergestaltung!
Depressiv mit Kreditkartenschulden beschließt die Hauptfigur ihrem Leben ein Ende zu setzen - und wird dabei als Magical Girl entdeckt. Es sieht sogar so aus, als ob sie nicht irgendein Magical Girl ist, sondern DAS Magicial Girl. Jetzt wendet sich bestimmt alles zum Guten... oder? Ich fand die Idee interessant, aber mir ist relativ schnell klargeworden, dass das nichts für mich ist. Die Denke war mir fremd, ich konnte mich nicht in die Protagonistin reindenkenfühlenwasauchimmer und die Selbstmitleidstour ging mir irgendwann auf den Keks. Vielleicht war ich aber auch nicht die richtige Zielgruppe, das gebe ich gerne zu.

Wir müssen über das Buchcover reden, denn wie pretty sieht das Buch bitte aus ich liebs 😍 A Magical Girl Retires hat eine einzigartige Story-Idee, kratzt auch paar ernste Themen aus dem Leben eines verarmten Millenial-Girls aus Südkorea an, aber wie gesagt: alles nur angekratzt. Ich liebe die Idee von einer Welt, in der Magical Girls wie normale Jobs Superhelden für die Welt sind, aber es ist alles sehr oberflächlich, hastig ohne Charakter- oder Worldbuilding-Tiefe erzählt. Ich habe mehr erwartet, und das Buch liest sich zwar schnell, aber ist jetzt auch leider keine Sensation für mich persönlich 🥺
We find our Protagonist at a very bad time in her life, she has a lot of credit card debt, she doesn't know what she wants to do in life, got fired from her job and just nothing seems to work out. Until she gets approached by a beautiful woman offering to make her a magical girl.
Very nice and quick read, in the beginning I was a little bit confused and questioned a lot in the book but after the first hour I started enjoying it and supporting the characters, I'm very excited for the next volume:)

I don’t know. At first I thought it was a cute little story about a girl, well… that becomes magical? I guess? But in the middle I got confused. The big apocalypse? Something I didn’t expect and don’t know how to feel about. The rest was fine.
