About the book

Published in 1920, Flappers and Philosophers gathers eight early stories in which F. Scott Fitzgerald anatomizes the glamour, restlessness, and moral improvisations of postwar American youth. Tales such as "Bernice Bobs Her Hair," "The Ice Palace," and "The Offshore Pirate" combine social comedy with romantic disillusion, displaying Fitzgerald's lyrical precision, sparkling dialogue, and gift for turning fashionable surfaces into emblems of deeper cultural unease. Situated at the dawn of the Jazz Age, the collection bridges magazine fiction and literary modernism. Fitzgerald was then newly famous after the success of This Side of Paradise, and his own experience of Princeton ambition, social aspiration, courtship, and celebrity informs these stories. Born in 1896 and closely associated with the era's shifting manners, he wrote from inside the world he scrutinized: its dances, flirtations, class codes, and intoxicating promises of self-invention. His marriage to Zelda Sayre further sharpened his fascination with the modern young woman. This volume is recommended to readers seeking the origins of Fitzgerald's mature art. It offers wit, elegance, and cultural diagnosis in compact form, illuminating both the enchantment and the fragility of the world that would later culminate in The Great Gatsby.
