About the book

In "The Hand of Ethelberta", Thomas Hardy weaves a witty and satirical tale of Ethelberta Chickerel, an ambitious young woman of humble origins who rises into London's high society through her wit, charm, and strategic marriages. As she navigates societal expectations and personal ambitions, Hardy explores themes of social mobility, artifice, and the complexities of love and reputation. The novel's sharp humor and keen social commentary make it a captivating exploration of Victorian pretensions and the pursuit of status. The Hand of Ethelberta - A Comedy in Chapters is an unchanged, high-quality reprint of the original edition of 1876.

A very interesting and different classic with some comical and dramatic elements and complex characters. I haven't seen the divide between classes explored in this way and it was just fascinating and fun, especially since it isn't a black and white portrayal. I'm not sure yet how I feel about the ending, but I'm glad Hardy didn't go for the expected.
