The Last Thing He Told Me

“Don’t ask a question you don’t want the answer to.” A gripping, unputdownable whirlwind ride with a ton of tension and a mysterious plot. And even though this story is so action-packed it also made me cry so hard when I finished the last page! Despite all the amazing twists, this is also a heart-wrenching love story about an introverted, artsy woman who never believed in true love—until she meets her husband. But then she realizes she knows nothing about his true identity. Hannah narrates events in the present, but we also get some flashbacks of some snippets during her marriage to Owen. It helped that Hannahs emotions throughout  are subtle, real, and honest. Hannah and Bailey’s journey—chasing the truth and defining their dysfunctional stepmother-daughter relationship—was one of the most powerful elements of the book and I loved them hunting for clues and doing all the detective work. This was my first but definitely not last Laura Dave book. Her writing style, the characters, the plot, and the pacing felt authentic.  While the mystery of Owen’s past is intriguing, the strength of this book lies in the characters. I will definitely watch the series on prime.

Durch Reese’s Book Club habe ich das Buch entdeckt und weil es dazu auch eine Serie gibt, wollte ich unbedingt zuerst die Buchvorlage lesen. Der Einstieg hat mir gefallen: Die Story beginnt sofort mit dem Verschwinden des Ehemanns, ohne lange Einleitung. Allerdings war die Spannung für mich sehr wechselhaft; einige Kapitel waren wirklich packend, andere dagegen eher schleppend (besonders dann, wenn sich die Protagonistin Hannah immer wieder dieselben Gedanken macht). Erzählt wird alles aus ihrer Perspektive, aber gerade hier hätte ich mir mehr Tiefe gewünscht. Ihre Emotionen bleiben oft recht oberflächlich, und auch die anderen Figuren wirken nicht besonders ausgearbeitet. Dadurch fiel es mir schwer, eine richtige Verbindung zu den Charakteren aufzubauen. Die Handlung rund um Milliardenbetrug in einer Softwarefirma konnte mich persönlich nicht so begeistern. Aus dem Klappentext ist dies auch nicht ersichtlich. Zwar wird nach und nach klar, dass hinter dem Verschwinden des Ehemannes mehr steckt, und besonders ab der 2. Buchhälfte kommen einige interessante Geheimnisse ans Licht, wodurch die Spannung etwas mehr wird. Insgesamt konnte mich das Buch leider nicht komplett überzeugen. Für mich war es eher ein Roman über die geheimnisvolle Vergangenheit des Ehemannes als ein echter Thriller. Das Ende hat mich zwar berührt, aber das war auch eines der wenigen Highlights. Die Grundidee hat definitiv Potenzial, aber von einem Thriller erwarte ich einfach mehr Tempo und Spannung. Ein echter Pageturner war es für mich leider nicht.
