A woman is forced to question her own identity in this riveting and emotionally charged thriller by the blockbuster bestselling author of The Good Girl, Mary Kubica

Jessie Sloane is on the path to rebuilding her life after years of caring for her ailing mother. She rents a new apartment and applies for college. But when the college informs her that her social security number has raised a red flag, Jessie discovers a shocking detail that causes her to doubt everything she’s ever known.

Finding herself suddenly at the center of a bizarre mystery, Jessie tumbles down a rabbit hole, which is only exacerbated by grief and a relentless lack of sleep. As days pass and the insomnia worsens, it plays with Jessie’s mind. Her judgment is blurred, her thoughts are hampered by fatigue. Jessie begins to see things until she can no longer tell the difference between what’s real and what she’s only imagined.

Meanwhile, twenty years earlier and two hundred and fifty miles away, another woman’s split-second decision may hold the key to Jessie’s secret past. Has Jessie’s whole life been a lie or have her delusions gotten the best of her?

Okay, so I am kind of torn with my rating and thoughts about this book! I started reading it because I loved Local woman missing by this author and found it available on Libby. I did quite enjoy how it started (I like dual timelines in thrillers/mysteries). Although, I kind of got a little bored by the way Jessie’s insomnia was described because it was so obvious that she was just imagining things. I mean I guess that’s what insomnia does to you but in this book I felt it was a little much. But I was still curious because the „twist“ seems the be revealed quite early on and I felt like there was something more coming. Then I read a few comments on here and was expecting a really bad twist. The ending or the actually twist however did not bother me too much it was more how it was dealt with it afterwards. I know this sound quite cryptic but I can’t really say much more without a spoiler. So overall I give this book 2.5 - 3 stars because I didn’t not like the ending and was a little bored in between.
