The Next Girl

Although the book was difficult to follow at first because of the many different perspectives, it became very exciting once the storylines came together. The plot was suspenseful and kept me wanting to know what would happen to Deborah, Isobel, and their family. However, I would have liked to see more chapters from Debbie’s and the kidnapper’s perspectives. Despite these weaknesses, the story became engaging and emotionally gripping, with a satisfying ending that tied everything together well.

Carla Kovach’s The Next Girl is a gripping entry into the detective thriller genre, introducing readers to the tenacious DI Gina Harte. While the story eventually delivers a compelling and emotional punch, it gets off to a somewhat slow and confusing start. The early chapters struggle with pacing, and the narrative can feel scattered as it juggles multiple threads without clear direction. However, once the story finds its rhythm, it becomes an engaging and suspenseful read. The true strength of the novel lies in its characters—particularly DI Gina Harte, who is both tough and emotionally complex. Kovach does a solid job crafting believable personalities, and while not all characters undergo deep development, there are moments of real growth that make them feel more human and relatable. As the investigation unfolds, the tension builds steadily, culminating in a satisfying and emotionally resonant ending. The resolution ties the narrative threads together well and leaves the reader with a sense of closure and justice served.

Das Buch "The next girl" bekommt von mir leider nur 2.5 Sterne. Die Geschichte war insgesamt eigentlich gut und spannend, dennoch haben mich ein paar Dinge gestört. Zu Beginn war der Schreibstil sehr schwierig zu lesen. Die Autorin hat aus vielen verschiedenen Sichten (Mörder, Ehemann, Detective etc.) die Geschichte erzählt und dann irgendwann zusammengeführt. Für mich war es bis zu dieser Zusammenführung nicht möglich den einzelnen Teilen richtig zu folgen und nichts durcheinander zu bringen. Dadurch habe ich viel länger gebraucht, um in die Geschichte reinzukommen. Als nach ein paar Kapiteln die bisherigen Einzelteile zusammengeführt wurde, wurde das Buch schlagartig sehr spannend für mich und man konnte dem Verlauf folgen. Ein weiterer Punkt, der mich gestört hat war, dass die einzelnen Charaktere von den Eigenschaften und vom Aussehen nicht so gut beschrieben wurden. Dadurch ist es mir bis zum Ende schwergefallen mir die vielen verschiedenen Charaktere vorzustellen. Während des Buchs, aber vorallem am Ende hätte ich mir mehr von Debbies Seite der Entführung gewünscht. Die Erzählungen von Seiten der Ermittlung war im Gegensatz fast schon zu ausführlich. Auch mehr Kapitel aus der Sicht des Entführers wären spannend gewesen. Insgesamt muss ich aber sagen, dass ich das Buch durch die spannende Handlung nicht einfach abbrechen wollte. Ich musste herausfinden, wie die Geschichte ausgeht und was mit Deborah, Isobel und ihrer Familie passiert.
