Nobody wants to be rags of countries like Congo, like Somalia, like Iraq, like Sudan, like Haiti and not even this one we live in - who wants to be a terrible place of hunger and things falling apart?'
Darling and her friends live in a shanty called Paradise, which of course is no such thing. It isn't all bad, though. There's mischief and adventure, games of Find bin Laden, stealing guavas, singing Lady Gaga at the tops of their voices.
They dream of the paradises of America, Dubai, Europe, where Madonna and Barack Obama and David Beckham live. For Darling, that dream will come true. But, like the thousands of people all over the world trying to forge new lives far from home, Darling finds this new paradise brings its own set of challenges - for her and also for those she's left behind.

Ein Buch, das man gelesen haben muss!
Bulawayos Figuren sind Kinder und sprechen so wie Kinder eben sprechen - schaffen es aber dennoch, mit eben genau dieser Sprache Gewaltiges, Erschütterndes auszudrücken. Der Roman schildert die Kindheit in Afrika sowie die anschließende Migrationserfahrung der Ich-Erzählerin Darling, die mit ca 10 Jahren (genaues Alter erfährt man nicht) aus Afrika (Land erfährt man nicht, wahrscheinlich Simbabwe) in die USA immigriert. Fremdheitsgefühle in den USA, scheinheiliges Mitleid und Interesse der Amerikaner mit bzw am afrikanischen Kontinent, das Identitätsdilemma im Spannungsfeld von Herkunfts- und Aufnahmeland werden durch die Geschichte von Darling eindrücklich aufgedeckt. Ein großes Buch!
Ich fand die Story interessant, mal was ganz anderes und aus einer neuen Perspektive. Ich fand es gut, dass das Buch in zwei Teile unterteilt wurde: Afrika und Amerika. Für mich war der Amerika-Teil etwas spannender🙈☺️ Leider hat sich das Buch sehr gezogen und war teilweise etwas langweilig. Es hat mich auch extrem gestört, dass die wörtliche Rede nie markiert wurde, das hat das Lesen deutlich erschwert. Aber alles in allem hat mir das Buch einen neuen Blickwinkel eröffnet und ich habe auch viel über die Themen nachgedacht ☺️🫶🏼 In dieser Hinsicht ist es empfehlenswert.
