In rural West Virginia, a hive offers broken humans salvation in exchange for loyalty and bodies. Crane, who finds both a chance to transition and a twisted kind of belonging within the hive, believes he’s finally found safety... until an unwanted pregnancy and the hive’s horrifying demands push everything into chaos. To say this book is “messed up” would be an understatement. It’s a relentless rollercoaster of emotions, none of them good, and yet it’s absolutely perfect. Crane’s story is emotional, disturbing, and strangely poetic. It’s the kind of horror that unsettles you to your core, while still compelling you to keep turning the pages. This novel manages to be both beautiful and unbearable, pulling you into a nightmare that stays with you long after you’ve turned the final page. It’s the most fantastic and terrifying thing I’ve read in a long time.
