Wow. Eine wirklich magische Geschichte. Tolle Charaktere, ein zauberhaftes Setting ein wirklich guter Schreibstil. Das Buch hat es in meine Top ten geschafft. Bravo.

4.75/5 I‘m a sucker for magic and enchanting stories. Probably the reason I loved this book so much. The vibes are Miss Peregrine‘s home for peculiar children and fantastic beast and where to find them. Which is exactly my vibe. Why is it not rated 5 stars then? Well, there‘s no plot. I could not explain what is exactly happening probably not even if my life was depending on it. The ending? Total blur and I‘m writing this review 5 mins after I finished the book. Whatever it says in the description, I‘m sorry but its not true. Which is probably why people either love or hate the book. It either disappoints because of that or it amazes because it enchants one in a different way. Morgensterns writing is amazing. Each character was „thought through“ (is that how you say it?), well written, individual, simply interesting. I liked that. For me the book felt like a warm hug or a comfort movie you can watch 100 times and it‘s as good as it was the first time.

Magical

A dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world. . The Night Circus, an absolute masterpiece! The writing was truly enchanting!! So unique! Other than that, I really loved the little texts between the chapters, most of them were letters, newsletters reports, imaginative descriptions of the circus or tarot cards descriptions. The way they were written was so meaningful and magical!! I know I sound like a broken record but for me it the writing was really memorable! The story itself was nice, nothing too fancy but still mysterious! I loved the characters but I would’ve wished to get more time with some of them. The book has big cast so naturally some characters get less "screentime" than others. Especially the love story between the main characters Celia and Marco felt kinda rushed?? Not really rushed, they did that their time with it (like in the book world itself, it took years for them to get to that point) but the reader didn’t witness much of that progression itself. Speaking of main characters, they are definitely marketed as the main characters and the story does build up on the fated destiny and their actions but they kinda didn’t feel like main characters for me tbh. I don’t know how to explain it but they just didn’t feel like the driving force of the story. That’s ok tbh, it’s unusual but it wasn’t a bad thing in this case. Like I said, it’s mostly the writing style that impressed me. And those in between texts! They were really really good! . I read this book without knowing that it’s such a hyped up book so I can’t really say much about that with my minimal knowledge but I did really enjoy it and would recommend it for sure!

Dieses Buch ist etwas ganz Besonderes. Die magische, mystische Atmosphäre und die fantasievollen Zelte des Zirkus haben mich so in ihren Bann gezogen! Die Geschichte wird sehr sorgfältig und langsam aufgebaut, (diese Erzählweise muss man mögen - ich LIEBE sie) bis schließlich alle Puzzelteile ihren Platz finden und ein so mitreißendes Finale ergeben, könnte heulen so gut war's.

19. Jahrhundert und Magie - eine perfekte Kombo!

Dieses Buch ist so ziemlich alles was ich mir erhofft hatte. The Night Circus spielt im 19. Jahrhundert was für mich eh immer ein Pluspunkt ist. Dann noch Magie dazu? Perfekt! Erin Morgenstern hat einen ganz besonderen Schreibstil. Man muss sich eventuell zunächst damit anfreunden, aber ich finde sie schafft es jedes Mal einen in die Welt eintauchen und träumen zu lassen. Ich lieb's! Die Charaktere sind super gut durchdacht und geschrieben. Einfach alles rund in dem Buch, wenn man mich fragt. Definitiv lesenswert!

Als würde man träumen während man liest.

Das Buch eröffnet einem eine Welt, aus der man nicht mehr aufwachen will. Von Seite eins zieht es einen in den Bann. Die Magie ist originell und aufregend. Der Zirkus an sich so gut beschrieben, man hat das Gefühl selbst dabei zu sein. Die Protagonisten sind vielschichtig und haben unglaublich viel Tiefe. Alles in allem ein tolles Buch das man gar nicht mehr aus der Hand legen will, weil es einen in eine andere Welt entführt.

A sea of ink would not be enough" I really loved the word building and the beautiful metaphors which made the words become something tangible and real as well as the detailed description of nearly anything. I also liked the little outlines of the stars on some of the pages. The many time and scene jumps were a little bit confusing. I always had to turn the pages back to the last chapter so that I could imagine where and when the new chapter was playing in comparison to the story line. So it was kinda hard to get into the story especially because it some chapters were more a fill-in and really detailed description of something than necessary to understand the story. I also didn't liked the ending though

Okay finally after months and days I am going to write the pending reviews. xD This book took me way too long to finish than I generally do with a book that size. I wouldn't say the book was boring or I wasn't captivated enough to go through with it because I was. This book was one of the most original stories I have read and it was like when you try to look for magic around you, something that captivates you completely, something which makes you hope and believe, this was that kind of the book. A story which actually takes you away from the real world and puts you in a dazzling magical world makes you forget about everything, which I think is why this book is so hyped and loved. My only problem was -- Way too many characters and because I was slow I wasn't able to keep a track of all of them and most of them were lost for me and some felt pointless (Apologies if I offend someone with that line) Second was it was too slow and dramatic, the book actually picked up for me when I was 300 pages or something in, that's when things started happening and even then they were too slow, so either there could have been more scenes with more drama or a shorter story. But still the story is beautiful, written in the most mesmerizing way possible with a world do get completely lost in.

Depression because I want to visit the night circus but it’s not real

2.5 This is not a romance. There is no action packed rivalry involved. This book is less about the characters but the atmosphere and scenery. I wish I had known these things before I started reading it. I guess my biggest problem with this book is that it was nothing like what the synopsis promised. I hoped for a fast paced plot building up to a magical duel. However, I fought to get through 500 pages of lengthy descriptions and flat characters. Morgenstern's writing style is beautiful. I liked discovering the variety of different circus tents and their magical contents, but unfortunately the plot cannot keep up with the setting. There are a lot of loose ends that might have been intended, but in the end, it left me rather frustrated. The conflict on which the story is based is never really elaborated and the magic system itself feels incomplete, lacking depth and further explanations on how it works. And the growing frustration about loopholes dotting nearly every page is only aggravated by the way each chapter throws the reader into yet another time and place. Characters are thrown into and ripped out of the story without apparent reason and it confused me up until I reached the final pages. At some point I stopped trying to grasp what was going on. All the unnecessary and overly explicit scene setting didn't help and it was a constant challenge to stay focused and to keep reading. The romance only made that harder since I could not root for any of the characters and there was no apparent reason for them to fall for each other. It felt forced and the relationships were underdeveloped. For most of the time, Celia and Marco aren't even in the same country (or on the same continent). When they finally meet and realize that they are opponents they fall in love instantly and create new attractions for circus visitors. After reaching that point of the story I started checking on the synopsis regularly, because calling that "a duel between two young magicians" left me thinking I picked up the wrong book. Overall, I would recommend reading The Night Circus for Morgenstern's intricate writing style. But if you are searching for any kind of quality content in terms of plot or characters, don't waste your time on this.

Magisch und einfach nur ganz besonders! Hat mich berührt.

4.5* The Night Circus ist ein Buches welches mich bereits von den ersten Seiten an mit seiner magischen und mysteriösen Atmosphäre überzeugen konnte. Das Buch zog mich sofort in seinen Bann und obschon die Handlung eigentlich nicht besonders temporeich ist und eigentlich eine lange Zeit nicht wirklich viel passiert, konnte ich das Buch kaum aus der Hand legen. Das Buch ist wunderschön geschrieben und besonders der Zirkus ist so toll beschrieben, dass man beim Lesen sofort den Wunsch bekommt diesen magischen Ort auch einmal besuchen zu können. Ich habe während dem Lesen jede Minute genossen, die ich dort verbringen konnte. Auch die Charaktere waren wirklich toll, nicht nur die Hauptfiguren sondern auch viele Nebenfiguren sind so toll beschrieben dass man sie sofort ins Herz schliesst und mit ihnen mitfiebert. Ich mag total wenn Geschichten aus verschiedenen Sichtweisen geschrieben sind die miteinander verwoben sind und alle irgendwann zusammenführen. So konnte mich die Geschichte auch durchgehend fesseln, selbst wenn die Handlung eher gemächlich ist und erst gegen Ende einige interessante Wendungen nimmt. The Night Circus war ein Buch welches mich komplett in seine Welt hat abtauchen lassen und mir ein paar wundervolle Lesestunden bereiten konnte.

Schöne Geschichte, gut geschrieben, aber nicht so ganz mein Ding.

I got almost halfway through the book and lost interest in the plot. The characters have no motivation to do what they do in this novel. Why did Celia and Marco (I forgot his real name) keep their real identities secret from each other? Why did Hector (the greatest narcissist of all time) die so suddenly? I felt like the author didn't know which way to go the whole time. Since everyone was kind of wandering around aimlessly in the story, I decided not to read any further. I just don't care anymore.

Ich weiß nicht was ich schreiben soll, es wird keine Rezension sein, da mich das Buch so gar nicht überzeugt ,der Schreibstil, trotz das er sehr anspruchsvoll ist, ist super leicht zu lesen. Manchmal wäre es besser sich die Jahre der jeweiligen Kapitel zu Notieren ,weil manche Kapitel in einem anderen Jahr stattfinden ,gelegentlich sind sogar 5 Jahre unterschied dazwischen ,was mich wiederum aus dem Konzept geschmissen hat. Das Hauptthema wird nur gelegentlich angesprochen und lässt einen des öfteren mit mehr Fragen zurück als beantwortet werden

Einfach wow! Ein verzauberndes Buch, das einen einfach in seinen Bann zieht!

If you look up the definition of "no plot, just vibes", this novel is probably what you would find. Don't get me wrong, I liked the world that was build, the magical always-changing circus where seemingly everything is possible. But that world itself is not enough to keep me invested. To say that the story was slow is an understatement. I would go as far and say that the plot was secondary to the world that Morgenstern build. The ending was exciting, however, it feels like low stakes when the "story" takes place in a world where anything is possible. 2.5/5*

Fantastisch geschrieben ein Traum nur das Ende kam etwas zu schnell. Ich wäre gerne noch eine Weile im Zirkus geblieben und hätte mehr wunder entdeckt

Read this years ago and it still hold such a special place in my heart!

Diese Geschichte steckt voller Magie! Echte Magie, aber auch solche, die nur den Anschein erweckt. Celia wird mit der Gabe geboren, Marko erlernt sie. Beide sind sie an der Erschaffung des "Nachtzirkus" beteiligt, ohne anfangs voneinander zu wissen, dass sie seit Kindertagen auf ein Duell vorbereitet wurden, bei dem es am Ende nur einen Sieger geben kann... Zum Teil hatte ich leichte Probleme den Zeitsprüngen zu folgen, aber generell hat mir der Stil der Geschichte gut gefallen. Es gibt viele magische Momente und besonders den Handlungsstrang von Poppet und Widget fand ich sehr gut. Die, laut Klappentext angekündigte, Lovestory zwischen Celia und Marko kommt dagegen viel zu kurz. Echtes Mitgefühl für die beiden konnte ich nicht aufbringen. In ihrem Wettkampf versuchen sich die beiden gegenseitig mit ihrer Magie zu übertrumpfen. Ein regelrechtes Duell auf Leben und Tod bleibt dagegen aus. Das Ende fand ich leicht verworren, aber gleichzeitig kann ich auch nicht sagen, dass es schlecht war. Ich habe es gern gelesen, auch wenn der tatsächliche rote Faden nicht wirklich vorhanden war.

Sehr atmosphärisch. Ich brauchte ein paar Seiten um ins Buch rein zu kommen, war danach aber gefesselt von der Geschichte.

Ich wollte das Buch wirklich gerne mögen aber es hat mich einfach nicht so richtig abgeholt. Die zweite Hälfte mehr als die erste. Ich war kein Fan der ständigen Zeitsprünge, das hat mich mehr als einmal raus gebracht. Ich mochte den Schreibstil und die Story an sich. Aber es war mir persönlich zu oft zu verwirrend. Es sollte wohl mystisch und mysteriös sein aber mich hat es nicht gekriegt. Ich glaube, das viele das Buch mögen werden aber für mich war es leider nicht so wirklich was.

Ein wenig Kindheitspoesie

Das ist eines dieser Bücher, die mehr auf die lyrische Tiefe, das Poetische und Atmosphärische setzen - und damit Erfolg haben. Als kleiner Junge war der Zirkus das Phänomen jemals für mich, meine wärmsten Erinnerungen sind in einer Manege, so wurde genau diese Nostalgie von dem Buch geweckt und während die Geschichte selbst schön war, so war es für mich das gesamte Drum und Dran, was mich überzeugt hat.

Die Atmosphäre war total magisch und was das anging, habe ich das Buch wirklich geliebt und mich aufs weiterlesen gefreut. Die Story jedoch konnte mich nicht überzeugen. Auch die Charaktere waren bloß in Ordnung, die Lovestory war zwar wirklich süß, aber durch den eher beschwerlichen Schreibstil konnte ich überhaupt keine Bindung zu den Charakteren aufbauen.

I listened to it as an audiobook. At first it didn't catch me at all. It was a lot of text for too less story in my opinion. I also got confused by the characters a bit, there are a lot of similar ones I think. Later the story got more engaging and I enjoyed it more. But not enough that I would consider the book more than ok. Also the timeline is not linear, it hops back sometimes, also a bit confusing.

Pre-Review/Update : can‘t believe I‘ve finally finished it Es brauchte Schweiß und langen Atem und eine 8-stündige Zugfahrt, um dieses Buch zu beenden aber I DID IT. Let me tell you: Ihr wollt alle im Zirkus leben. Also in diesem, von Erin Morgenstern entworfenen, magischen Ort. Aber was ihr nicht wollt, ist dieses langweilige, nicht zielführende Leben eines jeden Charakters in diesem Buch. Da wäre Marco: Von sich viel zu überzeugt, betrügt seine Freundin for straight 5 years (oder länger? Habe nach dem 10. Zeitsprung aufgehört einen Durchblick haben zu wollen). Er hat ganz schlimme Daddy-Issues und andere, die niemals aufgearbeitet werden. Ich hatte gehofft, gedacht, dass er vllt der „Böse“ wird aber offensichtlich ist die Info, dass er der „Good Guy“ ist, einfach nur an mir vorbei gegangen… Celia. Ist eigentlich ziemlich cool und sooooo viel talentierter als Marco, auch wenn nie wirklich erklärt wird, was ihre „Magie“ ist, ob es Magie oder „Illusionen“ sind. Ich würde gerne sagen, dass Erin das vllt beabsichtigt hatte aber in Wahrheit bin ich mir sicher, sie hatte einfach keine Ahnung, wie die Story laufen soll. 490 Seiten lang zog sich die Geschichte, nur um dann in einer komischen Insta-Love zu enden??? Die Personen haben alle 200 Seiten gebraucht, um überhaupt zum fcking Hauptspielort zu kommen und die Autorin entscheidet sich dann nicht dieses „Ich lasse alles extrem langsam passieren“-Motiv weiterzuführen? Hab echt keine Person in diesem Buch wirklich gemocht außer Friedrick Thießen, lol. Aber mochte die Szenerie, das Setting, den Zirkus. Durch den Schreibstil konnte ich die karamellisierten Äpfel schmecken, die Zuckerwatte riechen. Ich habe die Zelte geliebt. Und ich denke Erin Morgenstern ging es genauso. Nur, vor lauter Liebe zum Setting, sollte man den Plot eben nicht vergessen. 3 von 5 stern ⭐️⭐️⭐️ werde es niemals wieder lesen, es sei denn ich habe noch eine Minute zu leben, denn die fühlt sich dann vermutlich ewig an

Ich weiß nicht so recht wie ich diese Rezension schreiben soll, wie ich meine Gedanken und meine Gefühle in Worte fassen soll. Es war eine magische, verwirrende Reise. Wie in Trance flog ich mit dem Zirkus mit. Habe Jahrzehnte mit ihm verbracht, und doch fühlt es sich an wie wenige Minuten. Eine Geschichte so oberflächlich und doch so tiefgründig wie ich sie noch nie erlebt habe. Teilweise düster und melancholisch schwimmt man durch die Seiten und lernt Protagonisten kennen und lieben, und doch fühlt es sich immer nur so an als würde man nur das Cover des Buches zu sehen bekommen. Einzelne Fäden ziehen sich, verirrt durch das Buch. Manche finden sich zusammen und ergeben Sinn, einiges bleibt in der Luft hängen und man findet nie seinen Anfang oder das Ende. Solch eine Geschichte habe ich wirklich noch nie gelesen. Der Schreibstil ist wirklich unglaublich gut. Auch wenn ich mir vom Schluss etwas mehr erhofft habe, etwas mehr Emotion, etwas mehr Erklärung.. so blieb das Ende aber wie der Anfang. Der Zirkus kommt überraschend.

4,5 Stars. I love this book and the idea of the circus. This story is so beautifully described. I don't even know how to properly review this book. I'm usually not one for the very descriptive books, but this one is different. I was confused for a very long time, couldn't grasp the idea or the rules of this game, couldn't make sense of all the different bits and pieces of stories. But it all made perfect sense in the end! The atmosphere of the circus was so magical, I'd love to go and see it for myself.

Ich glaube ich war zu doof um das Buch vernünftig zu verstehen

"The Night Circus" war eines dieser zauberhaften Bücher, das mich unglaublich überrascht hat - weil es genau das richtige Buch zur richtigen Zeit war. In turbulenten, etwas niederschmetternden Zeiten will ich weder gritty realism lesen noch die Leiden und Qualen geschundener Helden gegen ein übermächtiges Böses. "The Night Circus" hat auch nichts davon, sondern ganz viel Atmosphäre und Zauber und ist eines der wenigen Bücher, das ohne Antagonisten und große Action auskommt und dennoch gut unterhält. Vom Thema erinnert mich das Buch an an den Film "The Prestige". Auch hier sind es zwei Magier, die sich als Konkurrenten gegenüberstehen und ihre unterschiedlichen Ansätze kontrastieren. Ihr Wettstreit ist uralt und geht doch in eine neue Runde, als Prospero the Enchanter seine junge Tochter Celia als seine nächste Spielerin bindet. Nun ist es an seinem Konkurrenten, einen geeigneten Gegenkandidaten zu präsentieren und auszubilden und die Bühne für das Spiel vorzubereiten ... Die zum Night Circus auswächst, der in der Zeit des jungen Bailey, der als weitere wichtige Figur einige Kapitel erzählt, mysteriös durch die Gegend tourt und die Besucher verzaubert. Hier verweben sich verschiedene Fäden, Vergangenheit und Werdegang von Celia und ihrem Konkurrenten, Geschichten von den Personen, die mit in das Geschehen und den Circus gezogen werden, und lange Zeit ist niemandem klar, was das Spiel eigentlich beinhaltet und nach welchen Regeln es gespielt wird. Dabei gibt es nicht nur die Magie der Magier, die diese als Tricks und Blendwerk für die Öffentlichkeit verkaufen, die weiterhin keine Ahnung von der Existenz echter Magie hat, sondern auch die Magie der Worte, die sehr eindrücklich und bildgewaltig die Szenerie malen. Rasante Verfolgungsjagden und große Schlachten sucht man hier vergeblich, es ist ein sehr leises und nach der Hälfte auch melancholisches Buch, das mich genauso berührt hat wie der Circus im Buch die Rêveurs, die Träumer, die ihm folgen. "But they are all rêveurs, each in their own way, even those who only have the means to visit the circus when it comes to them, rather than the other way around. They smile when they spot each other. They meet up at local pubs to have drinks and chat while they wait impatiently for the sun to set. It is these aficionados, these rêveurs, who see the details in the bigger picture of the circus. They see the nuance of the costumes, the intricacy of the signs. They buy sugar flowers and do not eat them, wrapping them in paper instead and carefully bringing them home. They are enthusiasts, devotees. Addicts. Something about the circus stirs their souls, and they ache for it when it is absent." S. 178 Als solcher fühle ich mich nach der Lektüre, auch wenn ich nicht weiß, ob dieses Buch mich immer so angesprochen hätte wie jetzt gerade. Es ist ein sehr spezielles Buch, das die richtige Zeit sucht, um aufzumuntern und zu berühren, seinen Zauber zu versprühen, wenn man sich darauf einlassen kann. Ansonsten könnte es nur eine langsame, lange Aneinanderreihung von belanglosen Szenen und zu vielen Zwischenseiten mit Beschreibungen und Anekdoten werden. Ich bin froh, dass ich es nicht eher gelesen habe, sondern genau jetzt, und es bei mir funktioniert hat.

Also, ich war mir anfangs echt nicht sicher wie ich dieses Buch bewerten soll. Aber mittlerweile hab ich gemerkt, dass man nicht zu streng mit diesem Buch umgehen darf. Denn dieses Buch ist wirklich ein Buch zum träumen! Man muss isch quasi in die Zirkus- und magische Welt mitreißen lassen und einfach nur träumen. Denn viel Spannung darf man hier wirklich nicht erwarten! Deswegen hab ich auch ein bisschen länger für das Buch gebraucht...

2.5/5 Das Cover? Wundervoll. Der Schreibstil? Wie ein literarischer Van Gogh. Inhalt? Naja... irgendwie mangelte es mir an einem konkreten Handlungsstrang. Es zentrierte sich alles um das Setting, was auch wundervoll beschrieben war. Der Konflikt war jedoch recht enttäuschend.

This is the perfect book of you love getting lost in a story and a magical world, that compares to nothing you have ever read or thought. But you have to read this slowly to like it and to comprehend it. There are so many details that make this world feel real and there are so many hints to things happening. But you have to be patient. You have to read it for the sole purpose of enjoying the details. Otherwise, if you are impatient (like me) it can be to slow at times and you might feels the need to skip some lines every other page. So if it is something for you, then you will love it.

The writing lives up to the promise of the Circus: makes you believe you are in a dream yourself.

Despite the beautiful magic, super interesting characters and the fact that I would absolutely LOVE getting the chance to visit the Night Circus myself, I can't give the novel five stars. That is because the dates given at the beginning of each chapter just got me a little confused since we do jump around in time quite a bit (which is not too bad because it just fits the atmosphere of the story, but still). Moreover, I am not satisfied with the amount of scenes we got between Celia and Marco. To completely fall in love with their love story it would have needed more of those. I read somewhere that is has been optioned to be turned into movie for a while, and even though I am really not sure whether that is still the plan, I sincerely hope it is, because I want more, so much more of the Night Circus!

This book was something else, so magical and mystical. I loved it sooooo much!

loved the book in general, but the ending was kind of disappointing (it all happened too quickly). but i really loved their relationship and the twins of course. also i loved all the ideas that erin morgenstern put in that book, the dresses, the tents, all those 'tricks' and the circus in general

Character focused, whimsical, beautifully written

The night circus didn't really have a plot but its more a book where the characters and the magic system and perspectives are inticrately and lyrically described, it was magical and whimsical and its just a book where you dont go into a different world because of the plot but the atmosphere and experiencing that circus.

the night circus is mindbogglingly imaginative and complicated. and it also deceiving, but i liked how the book ends and i admit i enjoyed celia and marco's romance. this book also has an interesting set of characters, everyone in this book has contributed something to the story and to the circus and they're not just supporting characters, in one way or another you can say that they are all important to the story, the only difference is how important they are. hmm, what else, this book is a challenge for me because of the way it was written. not sure with this: i noticed that there are three things that is happening in the book: the "duel" between celia and marco, an outsider/spectator experience or point of view for someone who isn't part of the circus (not sure with this one,) and story involving bailey and the murray twins. and because of that, i find it hard to follow the story, but everything becomes clear towards the end. this book is somewhere between great and bad.

Ich hab lange überlegt, 4 oder doch eher 3 Sterne. Das Buch ist toll geschrieben und die Idee des Zirkus selber gefällt mir wahnsinnig gut. Man wurde auf eine Art Traumreise mitgenommen. Surreal, aber wunderschön. Ein wenig bizarr und sonderbar, manchmal ein wenig gruselig. Das Ende war schön geschrieben, aber (und nun kommts) mir hat sich dieser ganze "Duell - Wettkampf - Spiel" Part nicht so wirklich erschlossen. Unter Duell oder Wettkampf verstehe ich gemeinhin etwas .. aggressiveres, aber hier war das doch eher.... Bewerfen mit Wattebäuschen. Mir fehlte einfach der komplette Konkurrenzhintergrund. Die waren ja eher viel zu nett zueinander und haben auf der gleichen Seite gestanden. Von Anfang an. Das war irgendwie.. unlogisch in meinen Augen. Vielleicht bin ich auch nur mal wieder zu blöd, um hier Andeutungen oder Symboliken zu raffen, aber dadurch, dass die beiden "Magier" in keinster Weise viel gegeneinander gearbeitet haben, hat sich mir der (Duell / Wettkampf!) Sinn dahinter nicht so ganz erschlossen. Nichtsdestotrotz war es wirklich toll zu lesen. :)
