*** A funny and touching story of an unlikely friendship and an improbable journey***

Alex Woods knows that he hasn't had the most conventional start in life.

He knows that growing up with a clairvoyant single mother won't endear him to the local bullies.

He also knows that even the most improbable events can happen - he's got the scars to prove it.

What he doesn't know yet is that when he meets ill-tempered, reclusive widower Mr Peterson, he'll make an unlikely friend. Someone who tells him that you only get one shot at life. That you have to make the best possible choices.

So when, aged seventeen, Alex is stopped at Dover customs with 113 grams of marijuana, an urn full of ashes on the passenger seat, and an entire nation in uproar, he's fairly sure he's done the right thing.

A tale of an unexpected friendship, an unlikely hero and an improbable journey, Alex's story treads the fine line between light and dark, laughter and tears. And it might just strike you as one of the funniest, most heartbreaking novels you've ever read.

I really really enjoyed this book. Alex was such a delightful main character and his relationship to mr Peterson was so heartwarming. You would think that so many bad things can’t happen to one person and that this book is unrealistic but I think that this made the book even more realistic.

What a beautiful, beautiful book. It's been a while since a story has affected me so much (and in 'affected' I mean "made me cry my eyes out"). This story turned out to be so much nore than I expected it to be when I started reading it. I certainly didn't expect it to be as deep and meaningful as it is. It gave me much to think about and encouraged me to make up my mind about a topic that is really controversial: Assisted suicide. When I started reading I had no idea this was going to be an important topic. But I'm glad it was, I really am. However this is not a story just about assisted suicide, it is about so much more. It is about life, chance, friendship. It's about being different, finding your place and your way in this world. It's really worth your time and I think EVERYBODY should read it.
