The Spear Cuts Through Water

I dove into this (dare I say) masterpiece after quite a long reading pause and was amazed. If you care one bit about the narration style and prose, you should read this. Not only is the world intriguing and the characters interesting, but also is the way in which this story is told magnificent. I personally love experimental narrative styles, and this book scratched that itch perfectly. It is an experience I won‘t forget anytime soon, and I look forward to reading more works from Simon Jimenez. I am still in awe. „He had only one thing left to say, and he said it quickly, and quietly, as if to slip a note through a closing door.“ „I was only a child, but even children are capable of kindness, and I gave him none.“ „He was an ugly thing when he cried. In the heights of his overwrought tears I wondered how he could be in any way related to those first people who danced under my moonlight - how this back-bent dog of battle was worthy of his own breath.“

Oh wow, das war wahrlich ein Buch, wie ich es vielleicht noch nie gelesen habe. Der Stil, in dem Jiminez diese Geschichte erzählt hat, ist außergewöhnlich und wundervoll und so sanft ... so ruhig. Dieses Fantasybuch ist (meiner Meinung nach) nicht aufgeregt oder voller Kanonenfeuer; nein, es ist voller ruhiger Momente und Gerüche und Eindrücke. Es ist voller Gedanken von Menschen, die wir niemals kennenlernen und die wenige Sekunden später nicht mehr am Leben sind. Ich möchte nicht zu viel über den Stil erzählen, weil ich denke, dies würde etwas von der Magie nehmen, die dieses Buch in sich trägt; aber lasst mich sagen ... es war märchenhaft. Simon Jiminez’s Schreibstil ist fabulös. Er ist voller Leben und Farben und so eindrücklich, dass es dafür keine richtigen Worte gibt. Jedenfalls nicht von mir. Vielleicht wäre dies sogar ein Buch, dass ich in seiner deutschen Übersetzung lesen würde, denn der Ausdruck von Jiminez hat Potenzial, um auf Deutsch noch einmal ganz andere Höhen zu erreichen. Oh man. Mit unseren Hauptcharakteren bin ich so schnell warm geworden, dass ich das Buch immer wieder zur Seite legen musste, um länger etwas von ihnen zu haben. Ich wollte nicht, dass es vorbei ist. Ich wollte Keema und Jun nicht verlieren, wollte ihren Kampf und Tanz so lang wie möglich genießen. Das ganze Buch – die ganze Geschichte – ist in fünf Tagen erzählt und das mit so einer Ruhe, dass ich manchmal wahnsinnig werden wollte, wäre es nicht SO GUT gewesen. Wirklich, hier steckt so viel Liebe und so viel Detail drin, (und so viel f*cking Kreativität) das ich schon allein deshalb manchmal weinen wollte. „The Spear Cuts Through Water“ hat diese kindliche Neugierde in mir geweckt, die einfach alles wissen wollte und nie genug bekommen konnte. Und wer sich wegen dem „LGBT / Queer / Romance“ tag abgeschreckt fühlt, dem möchte ich sagen, dass die „Romance“ hier ganz, ganz klein und seicht und zwischen den Zeilen ist. Es gibt wenige Momente, in denen es einem mal kurz ein wenig auf die Nase gebunden wird. Das hier ist keine Romantasy. (oder wie das heißt) Das hier ist Fantasy mit diesem ultra feinen Hauch Romantik. Ich bin einfach sprachlos ... dieses Buch ist absolut grandios!

The story about the downfall of an empire told to you by a fallen goddess who constantly gets interrupted by the spirits of the background characters. Not gonna lie the first 10% were confusing as fuck but then everything came together until around 60% when everything made sense with the established rules but also everything goes crazy but in a very satisfying and fun way. Content Warning for cannibalism - If you think eating gods is cannibalism I guess. Multiple timelines are interweaved in a way that is confusing at first but with such a good payoff. The Lore of this world is beautiful and complex, as are the characters that inhibit it. What the author does with words and the use of different POVs (First, second and third Person usage) is incredible and absolutely breathtaking and there were multiple moments where I went "Thats sooo smart" Just read this book If you like hero stories even in the slightest!
