This is definitely one of my favourite novels: I like the beauty of its prose which never feels artificial or forced. I like the storyline that somehow manages to feel very calm, although you just want to keep on reading. I love the fact that it transports you to a different place and time, that it allows you to lose yourself in the narrative, while at the same time it teaches you so much on so many different levels (historically, artistically, philosophically). And even though all the characters are flawed, the novel makes you understand them and sympathize with them...that is quite an achievement. Another wonderful thing this novel did was the combination of so many different cultural backgrounds. And now - having read the final page (and I know it sounds like a cliché and others have written it before - but it is the truth) - I feel like I have lost a friend.
