DNF’ed at 42(?)% I REALLY wanted to love this book, I mean 1920’s, magical powers, it just sounds perfect for me. I was so excited when I got it and then I just couldn’t get into it at all. When I read the physical book it got to page 42, not very far at all. But I didn’t want to give up on the book yet so I tried the audiobook and at 42% I just couldn’t take it anymore. I wanted to read it so much but I didn’t have any fun doing so. My biggest problem was that I just couldn’t stand Evie, she felt so obnoxious and annoying to me. I also couldn’t remember any of the other characters or what was even going on because I just couldn’t get myself to care. So yeah I’m really sad about this one and I just gave to 2 stars because I’m pretty sure it isn’t actually that bad.
It wasn’t what I hoped it would be. 2.5 stars.
3.5 stars It took me ages to finish that book because I had so many things to do and was in the biggest reading slump ever. This doesn't mean that I did not like the book - on the contrary, I really enjoyed it. It was so creepy and mysterious. I absolutely loved the writing style and the world was fabulous! The only thing I didn't like is that it was a little slow paced.
Eins der besten YA-Bücher, das ich seit langem gelesen habe! Hoffentlich erscheint der zweite Band der Serie bald!
reread: 4 stars I really enjoyed this reread. I want to finish this series this year, and I realized that I did not remember one singular thing, which is why it was essential for me to reread this. I loved these characters so much! Literally cannot choose a favorite. However, I still think it didn't have to be as long as it was. 3,5/5 stars I listened to the audiobook of this and I have to say that I loved the narrator. She did such a good job of mimicking all the different voices and singing all the songs which were incorporated. I highly recommend the audiobook for this one! That being said, the first half of the book was rather slow, there were a lot of characters which were introduced, and I was super confused as to who is who, and why these people even matter in the first place. That being said, however, the pace picked up at around the halfway point, and from that moment on I really started to enjoy myself while reading the book. Even though for me personally, it was not as spooky as everyone says it is, it still had a thrill to it, which I appreciated. By the end, I even liked almost all of the characters, also the ones who annoyed me a bit at the beginning. Overall, I loved the story and can't wait to see what the next few books in the series are like.
[I received a free copy from Goodreads First Reads.] The cover, which first attracted me to this book, led me to imagine a different sort of read than I was given. It’s a sophisticated cover, so I expected a sophisticated world and characters, and a lot more mystery. It was (for the most part) a fun, campy read that actually reminded me a great deal of Scooby Doo so that was pretty entertaining. The Diviners is a sometimes strange mix of genres: paranormal, historical, mystery, thriller, steampunk, etc. mostly it works, but the gruesome murder mystery seemed the most at odds with the tone of the story (although the steampunk aspect wasn’t much developed either). The campy and the creepy worked well separately but put together the story became at odds with itself and failed for it. If integrated differently this could’ve been a really great concept, but unfortunately the pacing didn’t help. The characters could’ve been stronger, Evie and co. are so full of '20s catch phrases and cliches that you didn't really get to know them at all. I actually had this same problem with Bray’s Gemma Doyle trilogy where the characters remained quite static and immature. I do think the story benefited from a larger cast of characters, but unfortunately the narration choice didn’t really let any of them shine. The Museum of Creepy Crawlies, where most of the story took place, was a fun setting but I would’ve liked a bit more life and energy to have come from it. Otherwise it kind of felt like an ordinary library or hang-out spot. All in all this was by no means a poor read I just wouldn't feel obligated to read it again. I am curious enough in the premise to try another of the projected series, however but I do hope the pacing gets better and that the characters are stronger. It seemed like this book was stretched out to meet the requirements of a longer series so with that promise I’ll hope that the next books are better.
Edit: I really liked this story the first time around, like two years ago. Back than I found it frustrating that we had so many POV’s. Today I loved it. It makes the story whole. Evie goes through a change that suits her well. And I loved all her friends and different aspects of life in the 1920‘s. On to book two.
Can't wait for more
Just some thoughts: The book started kinda slow for me. I got really invested around page 200 (give or take a few). Evie can be quite annoying at times, but I'm happy to see her develope. Even though I don't approve of her decision at the end. Concering the reporters and this thing with Jericho. I do understand her, but damn. She's going to hurt Jericho so much, I'm sure of it. My poor mechanical boy. I adored Memphis and Theta, they're quite cute. All in all, I did enjoy the story, despite some issues I had, and I will continue with this series. I shall see how these characters are going to develope.
Ok... I finally made it. A chapter a day did the job. Don’t get me wrong - it was not a bad book. I like the actual storyline around the diviners and the murder investigation and I love the setting in the 1920s. What I did not like was that there was too much going on besides that. Too many changes of setting and point of view - it just took too long to progress the actual plot and what I was really interested in. The mysterious and 20s atmosphere was however captured just perfectly. And the ending did make me curious for more - but not sure if I’ll indeed ever pick up the next book in the series...
