The Castle of Otranto (1764) is the first supernatural English novel and one of the most influential works of Gothic fiction. It inaugurated a literary genre that will be forever associated with the effects that Walpole pioneered. Professing to be a translation of a mysterious Italian tale from the darkest Middle Ages, the novel tells of Manfred, prince of Otranto, whose fear of an ancient prophecy sets him on a course of destruction. After the grotesque death of his only son, Conrad, on his wedding day, Manfred determines to marry the bride-to-be. The virgin Isabella flees through a castle riddled with secret passages. Chilling coincidences, ghostly visitations, arcane revelations, and violent combat combine in a heady mix that terrified the novel's first readers.
In this new edition Nick Groom examines the reasons for its extraordinary impact and the Gothic culture from which it sprang. The Castle of Otranto was a game-changer, and Walpole the writer who paved the way for modern horror exponents.

⚔️🩸🏰 Eine unheilvolle Prophezeiung und ein unerklärlicher Todesfall: Als der junge Conrad nicht zu seiner Trauung erscheint, sondern wenig später von einem riesigen Helm erschlagen aufgefunden wird, nimmt das Chaos seinen Lauf. Portraits verlassen geräuschvoll ihre Bilderrahmen, Diener wollen des nachts einen Riesen gesehen haben, der cholerische Familienvater stellt der Verlobten seines soeben verstorbenen Sohnes nach, um wenigstens so seine Erblinie zu bewahren, ein Mönch weiß mehr, als er zugibt und vor dem Tor erscheint ein Ritter mit einem riesengroßen Schwert, der den rechtmäßigen Anspruch auf Burg Otranto erhebt. Mittendrin zwei junge Mädchen, die sich in denselben Unbekannten verlieben, aber dem jeweils anderen Vater versprochen werden, eine Statue mit Nasenbluten, ein sprechendes Skelett, der Geist eines Riesen, Mord und Totschlag - und all das wegen einer popeligen Burg… 📜 Obwohl ca. 200 Jahre jünger, ließt sich der Text sehr Shakespeare-esque. Kein Wunder, da viele direkte Zitate und Anspielungen auf Shakespeares Werke zu finden sind (netterweise jeweils per Fußnote gekennzeichnet) und die Handlung an vielen Stellen enge Parallelen zu Hamlet aufweist (hab ich im Internet gehört). 👻 Nicht nur durch die thematische Ausrichtung, sondern auch durch Aufbau und Stil verweist der Roman auf Erzählungen vorangegangener Jahrhunderte und badet in mittelalterlichen Klischees, samt altertümlicher Konformitäten, ergänzt durch das ein oder andere übernatürliche Element, welches „The Castle of Otranto“ zum allerersten Schauerroman bzw. gothic novel macht.
