Warning: supervillain in training. Risk of world domination.

Locus and Hugo Award-winning author John Scalzi brings us Starter Villain, a turbo-charged tale of a family business with a difference. This one comes with a hidden headquarters, minions, talking cats and villainous rivals worthy of James Bond.

Divorced, broke and emotionally dependent on his cat, Charlie hasn't been loving life. Then he finds out his recently deceased Uncle Jake has left him a top-secret, international supervillain business. And, as if this wasn't problematic enough, Jake's vengeful rivals ambush the funeral. Charlie must decide if he should stay stuck in his rut, or step up to take on the business, the enemies, the minions, the hidden volcano lair . . .

Even harder to get used to are the talking, computer-savvy cats - and the fact that they're management. If Charlie says yes to his inheritance, could this lifeline become a death wish? Or could it finally be his chance to shine?

'An enormously entertaining comedy' - Adrian Tchaikovsky, author of Service Model and Children of Time

It was a fun and quick read A delightful, lighthearted story, that is easy to digest. I expected a bit more villainy stuff happening 😅 But nonetheless, it was an entertaining story.

Charlie's life gets turned upside down when his uncle dies and leaves his super villain business to him. Turns out his uncle Jake had enemies who are now coming after Charlie as well. With the help of unionized dolphins, hyperintelligent talking spy cats, and a terrifying hunchperson at his side, Charlie has to win a war his uncle started. •●🆁🅴🆅🅸🅴🆆●• What can I say… It was a fun and quick read A delightful, lighthearted story, that is easy to digest. The first half of the book was great; I flew through the pages. There were some hilarious scenes. The dolphins are the best 🤣 Unfortunately, after the whole villain situation got explained, it lost a bit of momentum. I expected a bit more villainy stuff happening 😅 But nonetheless, it was an entertaining story.

this is equally stupid and fun and i loved every single page of it i love charly and how he sees through the schemes he gets put into, how he actually really uses his brain and the way he interacts with the different characters the book is exactly as long as it should be and gives you a little short story about one of the side characters which fits right in because you see more of Hera Starter Villain has scalzis typical writing style of themes that should feel heavier but don't and a very easy and consistent flow. the pace keeps the same over the whole book. i absolutely love how Scalzi is able to keep the tone, the pace, the feeling of different stages of a book the same and still let the reader feel the drama and the tension without the pace running away

Very entertaining! I'm usually not really into funny books, but the cats stole my heart. The whole story is so strange you just have to like it.
