But when a teen in Kansas City is murdered over a dispute in the SLAY world, news of the game reaches mainstream media, and SLAY is labeled a racist, exclusionist, violent hub for thugs and criminals. Even worse, an anonymous troll infiltrates the game, threatening to sue Kiera for “anti-white discrimination.”
Driven to save the only world in which she can be herself, Kiera must preserve her secret identity and harness what it means to be unapologetically Black in a world intimidated by Blackness. But can she protect her game without losing herself in the process?

Vieles in dem Buch habe ich nicht verstanden, weil ich weiß bin. Und nicht alles davon habe ich recherchiert. Dafür möchte ich jetzt keinen Orden oder so, es hat mit dem Buch zu tun. Als die weiße Öffentlichkeit von dem Spiel SLAY erfährt, halten es einige für rassistisch, weil es nur Schwarze spielen können. Das ist ausschließend, ja, aber nicht rassistisch. Weiße sind in der Machtposition. Verlieren sie etwas, wenn sie dieses eine Spiel nicht spielen? Wenn 90% aller Spiele für sie gemacht sind, ihre Codes verwenden, die Figuren aussehen wie sie und dann gibt es eins, das ein geschützter Raum für Schwarze Menschen sein möchte. Verliert ihr da wirklich etwas? Genausowenig verliere ich etwas, wenn ich ein paar Anspielungen und Codes nicht verstehe. Trotzdem habe ich ein richtig gutes Buch gelesen, einiges gelernt und mich mit den Figuren identifiziert. Auch als weiße Leserin. Für mich ist das die einfachste Art, neue Perspektiven kennenzulernen und letztlich empathischer zu werden: Lesen.
