HOMECOMING

In the aftermath of Gu Mang’s defeat of the Demonblood Beast, Mo Xi rallies Chonghua’s troops to face the Liao Kingdom. But there is little hope for victory. The blood pool left by the beast’s death draws ever closer to the city walls, and the wicked Hua Po’an appears unstoppable. Just as all seems lost, the enigmatic Jiang Fuli reappears with an astonishing magical item—an ancient artifact with the ability to alter the past.

Mo Xi is presented with one last chance to avert Chonghua’s tragic future and save everyone he’s lost, though the cost to himself could be unimaginable. He is faced with a choice: How much more can he sacrifice for his beloved, and for the nation they both call home?

The final volume with a great ending and a long extra. It's a bit hard to rate because the ending of the main story would have been 5☆, but that extra was a bit unnecessary, but still nice. The end of the main story was really well done. I thought I knew what was happening, and then it went in another direction, but it all made sense. I couldn't stop crying at how tragic it all was 😭😭😭 But I'm glad they still got a happy ending. If I had to say what the big topic of the series was, I'd say being selfless and loyalty. The few chapters after the finale were also good, though idk what to think of a few things, like everything around Mengze was a bit... odd 😅 But all in all, I was very satisfied with the end 😌 Then ⅔ of the volume were this semi-AU novella that had a good story but felt like a waste as an extra for this specific story. It took place in the same world just that Gu Mang was given the opportunity to attend the academy as well, so he and Mo Xi meet there and go on a mission together In the beginning, I was excited for a school/academy setting, and when Lu Zhanxing appeared, I thought we'd get to see more side characters. I wanted Murong Chuyi to appear, but no one else did. It was mostly just the mission, which was about a malevolent ghost and the misfortune of this one family. It was an interesting story, but felt more like the beginning of a new book altogether. I wanted to see how they fall in love in the new reality, but that didn't happen yet. There was one kiss, but that was because of a ghost possession. Otherwise, nothing romantic or anything happened. Just a bit of joking around on Gu Mang's part. I was quite disappointed because I wanted more romance or even a bit of smut at the end. The main story was so sad that there was no space for it, which made sense, but I wanted the characters to have a bit of fun without tragedy breathing down their neck 😅 Another really interesting thing was the afterword. Remember how I was like, "This has so many similarities with Erha." Turns out, there is a reason for that. It was originally supposed to be a kind of spinoff with the characters transmigrating into the book, specifically in a "Wushan Palace illusion dungeon, realizing some of Taxian-Jun's dreams and desires"... I don't want to know what kind of fever dream that would have been 😂😂😂 I'm glad her editor advised against it 👀 But due to this she had to rewrite a lot of it and also admitted to not being that good at developing the relationship of the characters since she had written their personalities out of her comfort zone. And as much as I loved their story, I get what she meant and agree that that wasn't the strongest part of the novel. I enjoyed the whole thing with the Yue Clan and Gu Mang's unwavering loyalty to his comrades the most. I felt the most for their relationship at the very end, and that was also connected to that. All in all, a series that really grew on me (the first two volumes were a bit slow) and that I enjoyed a lot in the end. It was really sad, but not entirely (people need to stop saying it's hurt/comfort without comfort; that's not true 😭).

Very early in this series I could already tell that this would emotionally obliterate me. The story of Gu Mang and Mo Xi is so incredibly tragic. Filled with so much pain and betrayal. While I will miss the characters a lot, I'm glad that they got their happy and peaceful end and that they no longer need to suffer.
