Vaclav Smil is Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Manitoba. He is the author of over forty books on topics including energy, environmental and population change, food production and nutrition, technical innovation, risk assessment and public policy. No other living scientist has had more books (on a wide variety of topics) reviewed in Nature. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, in 2010 he was named by Foreign Policy as one of the Top 100 Global Thinkers. This is his first book for a more general readership.

In einem Song: Tell Me Why Supermode, Axwell, Steve Angello
Vaclav Smith beschreibt, erläutert und vergleicht Statistiken zu Alltagsfragen aber auch den wichtigen Fragen unserer Zeit (Klimawandel, demografischen Wandel im globalen Westen vs. im Rest der Welt und resultierende Nahrungsmittelknappheit und ressourceneffiziente Nahrungsproduktion). Zudem geht es auch um interessante und unintuitive Aspekte/Fakten wie die Bizarre Statistik, dass es erst Kraftfahrzeuge auf den Straßen gab und danach erst das Fahrrad die Straßen eroberte. Insgesamt ist das Buch gut und leicht verdaulich geschrieben. Das erste Drittel hat mich wirklich überzeugt, interessante Statistiken und Gedankengänge bezüglich Korrelation vs. Kausalität. In der Mitte des Buches waren waren die Statistiken eher technisch, teilweise nichts neues. Zum Ende hin, vor allem zu den Ernährungsthematischen Statistiken fehlt ein wenig die letzte Schlussfolgerung für welche man ja das Buch liest. Auch werden weniger Statistiken verglichen, sondern aus einer einzelnen Statistik eine Erkenntnis, manchmal sogar keine Erkenntnis abgeleitet. Eine Sammlung von Statistiken ist alleine ja nicht wirklich interessant/ unterhaltsam zu lesen. Durch die vielen Mini- Kapitel lässt sich das Buch gut kurz zwischendurch in kleinen Häppchen lesen und man kann auch problemlos größere Pausen im Leseprozess machen, da die Kapitel nur inhaltlich gruppiert sind, aber nicht aufeinander aufbauen.
Intriguing Topics, but a Disappointing Read
Sooo I had to put this book aside, unfortunately. The chapter titles sounded really interesting, like How Big Can a Wind Turbine Be?, How Safe is Flying?, or What Makes People Happy? - and it covered many more topics I was genuinely looking forward to. Very disappointed!! The writing style is very dry, and even with very short chapters (3–4 pages), I found it hard to concentrate. The content didn’t feel new or particularly insightful, it’s mostly basic knowledge. I understand that enjoyment of this book depends heavily on prior knowledge and personal taste, but for me, it just didn’t work 🙅🏻♀️ In short, while the topics are intriguing in theory, the presentation and depth were not engaging enough, so this book wasn’t for me.
