Über dieses Buch bin ich immer wieder und wieder gestolpert - so lange, bis es gut war und ich endlich dazu es zu lesen. Und kaum mehr davon los kam. Und dann war es auch viel zu schnell wieder vorbei. Ivy hat leichte Züge eines Unzuverlässigen Erzählers, aber ich mochte sie nichtsdestotrotz (oder vielleicht gerade deswegen). Sie ist eine eher zweifelhafte Heldin, oftmals schwach, zweifelnd, VERzweifelnd. Aber sie steht immer wieder auf, macht weiter, auch wenn es ihr oft schwer fällt. Ja, ich mochte sie von Anfang an und sie wuchs mir enorm ans Herz. Ich mag ihre Art, ihre Geschichte zu erzählen. Ihre Geschichte ist der typische Fall eines "Fish Out of Water"-Szenarios, als sie sich plötzlich an dieser Schule wiederfindet - umgeben von magisch begabten Leuten und sie als Normalsterbliche soll einen Mordfall klären. Auch diese Verbindung fand ich von Gailey sehr gelungen aufgebaut: Krimi und fantastische Elemente vereint. Es passt hier wirklich hervorragend und verbindet sich angenehm, ohne dass das eine das andere zu dominieren versucht. Dabei stehen auch die zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen im Fokus, auch wenn gegen Ende alles etwas schnell geht. Das ist aber nur ein kleiner Kritikpunkt, den ich anführe, denn ansonsten hatte ich mit "Magic for Liars" einige tolle Lesestunden, bei denen ich voll auf meine Kosten kam. Das nächste Buch von Sarah Gailey ist bereits auf der Wunschliste gelandet.
Soooo the reviews are pretty mixed so I didn't expect too much but I have to say - I was positively surprised! Loved the self-sabotaging vibe of the protagonist, loved her quirky/cute lovebird alter ego, liked the whole setting (apart from the Harry Potter mashups, they are a bit over the top, most of you are right). I LOVED how totally realistic magical teens were portrait. They just don't care about making the world a better place (yet) but instead are scribbling on lockers, the usual you-can't-sit-with-us-clique-building and stuff. Would definitely happen that way. I really liked how the whole magic part is part of the story but not main focus (and someone wrote the protagonist gave her Petunia Dursley vibes and that's 100% true). She's kinda like the muggle in the whole magic world while her sister is a teacher there. Some of you wrote they got the plot after some pages. I definitely didn't and was surprised at the end and liked how former informations fit afterwards. Had much fun reading it and am kinda sorry it's a 1-book-only, because I'd LOVE to see her, her magical sister and her on/off boyfriend solve cases together.
