Like a Boy But Not a Boy

• andrea bennett is a nonbinary writer and artist whose work is informed by such books as Maggie Nelson's The Argonauts and Ivan Coyote's Tomboy Survival Guide. Their day job is as book designer at Talonbooks.

• A major theme of the book is centered around non-binary experience, especially pregnancy and parenthood. When Andrea became pregnant, they weren't able to find many resources on the subject, so it became something they wanted to document as they went through the experience.
• The book is part memoir and part observational. One essay is actually comprised of 16 "stories" about queer millennials from small communities, told in third person and developed from interviews. They were asked what it had been like to come of age in Canada just as same-sex marriage was legalized -- a moment that has been seen as the start of a new era, but which in actual fact was more complicated, especially for those in small communities.

• Through each essay, andrea is working through what it means to be queer and non-binary in order to assert their rightful place in the world, especially through the lens of being a queer parent in a small town. Also, as a millennial, they are from a new generation of queers who are engaged and socially and politically mindful.

• Andrea's influences include Maggie Nelson, Ivan Coyote, S. Bear Bergman, Kai Cheng Thom, Judith Butler, and Jack Halberstam. Like many of these authors, andrea's book will be a conversation starter on gender and non-binary experience.
