Le philosophe, le roi, le tyran

Les études du présent volume sont le fruit des travaux que le Collegium Politicum, réseau de recherche européen, consacre à la pensée politique ancienne et à son influence. Les réflexions anciennes sur la royauté et la tyrannie sont examinées ici de façon à montrer combien elles ont nourri les théories politiques grecques et romaines, et combien les débats qu'elles ont suscités ont eu d'influence sur la pensée politique renaissante et moderne. Elles mettent plus particulièrement l'accent sur l'importance de la figure du roi et du tyran dans la recherche sur la constitution et sur le pouvoir, telle qu'elle se forme dès le IVème s. av. J.-C., à Athènes, et elles cherchent à rendre raison de ce qui se joue, entre condamnation des excès tyrannique et v£u d'une royauté aussi puissante que savante, dans les textes philosophiques grecs où naît la pensée politique européenne. *** The contributions collected in this volume reflect the research undertaken within the Collegium Politicum, a European academic network dedicated to ancient political thought and its tradition. This book shows how Greek and Roman political theory has been nurtured by views and arguments on kingship and tyranny, which in turn have greatly influenced the political thought of the Renaissance and modern times. The analysis of the paradigms and characters of the king and the tyrant has been a decisive element in the formation, in Fourth-Century Athens, of new theories of constitution and power. Whether reproving tyrannical excesses or hoping for the advent of a king both wise and powerful, Greek philosophers laid by their writings the foundations of European political thought.
