Written by Norwegian Nobel laureate Knut Hamsun in 1890, Hunger has been acclaimed and is considered the first modern Scandinavian novel and an outstanding example of the psychological novel. The story is told in the first person, in which the unnamed fictional character narrates the misery he finds himself in due to the lack of stable employment, compounded by the difficult circumstances of 19th-century Christiania. Fundamentally, it explores the irrationality of the human mind in an intriguing and sometimes humorous way.
